Ripoff of Prometheus or in same universe?

I noticed that the black goo from Prometheus appears to play a role in the character's physical evolution. Perhaps the same engineers are responsible? Otherwise its pretty heavy borrowing from another franchise.

reply

No. This film is based on the Spider-Man comics from the 1980s with the Symbiote (the black alien substance) appearing in 1984 and bonding with Eddie Brock to become Venom four years later.

So Alien came out in 1979, maybe it borrow from that.

reply

I don't think so. The backstory for the Xenomorph with the Engineers wasn't thought up until decades later. Ridley Scott held some interest in the Space Jockey while making "Alien", but I doubt he had any elaborate ideas back then.

reply

yes but Prometheus was a prequel to Alien so happened like 75 years beforehand.

T-r-o-l... Negative!

Borrowed from the Alien franchise? Maybe, maybe not. Likely the latter. But it for sure didn’t steal anything from Prometheus.

The symbiotes (the gooey alien substance) in this film take their design from the comics in which they appear in.
