Why let her fall in the hole without digging up the place?

His wife is sucked down the hole and his reaction is, "Oh well. She's dead. Because even though I just discovered this basement, I know the hole is too deep to survive the fall. Let's visit her once a year and draw her a picture."
If it were me, I'd have called 911 and would have bulldozed that place if necessary. I would have at least dropped a line down there, with a camera (with the help of police) and figured out for sure where my wife was.

This movie pretty much sucked.

I guess the normal reaction, in the real world, would be to pull down the house (if necessary) and dig up the cellar? In this movie, they apparently didn't do it. Although the creatures were afraid that might happen. Nothing else to say than: it's a movie.

This is a common thought I have in so many action/thriller/horror movies. After the dust has settled and you've had a good meal and a shower, what on earth do you tell the police, neighbours, friends and family who are wondering what happened?

True! It's just like if someone falls down a man hole, they try and move heaven and earth to save them.

I agree, and after all Sally and her Father knew about the creatures. So the "secret" was out. Are they supposed to shut up about everything for the rest of their life?

I think it was a "lazy" ending. Personally, it would have been better if the dad had been sucked down the hole and end the movie right there.

it was just a ending to a scary flick, thats how they chose to end it. By having someone sucked down a hole

Yeah, but that's bullish!t ...how the hell do you explain her disappearance to people who never saw those creatures? The police would be all over that guy... same thing with ending to Mama, you can't just have an ending like that and expect people to be like, "Oh okay, so I guess people are just going to be okay with their story about little creatures snatching his wife into a hole and we were unable to do anything" ...umm, MURDERER!! <----that's what any normal person would think....but whatever ....

Well you wouldn't tell the police about the little people would you? You would just say your wife fell into the hole DUH! Following that there would be a massive rescue and excavation undertaking.

@OP: Exactly my thought. The ending makes no sense whatsoever.

Actually most horror movies make no sense. Movies like Poltergeust or this one, always show that the most horrific things are going on but they stay one more night or take a bath.
In real life people would get out immediately and not stick around like in almost all these type of movies...lol.

Agreed. While it started off well, and had decent sound FX, the movie started to fall apart when we first saw the creatures as any mystery was gone.

Then the ending was beyond terrible. No police and no attempt to rescue her? Jeez, I can only express my displeasure with strong expletives at such an ending!

Knowing how the creatures hate light, I'd consider tormenting the little bastards by flinging flares down the hole, light up their dark pit, and listen to their screams. Mind you, it could also be a doorway to another dimension where the flares would get sucked away.

Couple of molotov cocktails probably wouldn't even hurt the house, since they were in a stove... the vent of which goes far, far below the house for some reason. I mean, funnel some gasoline through the grate in the top of the stove and light it up. Open it and have a guy standing by with flamethrowers. Hell, that even sounds like fun. Tooth fairy exterminators.

Why can't they light parts of the house on fire if the cops obviously never come and check *anything* that goes on out there.

It could be a doorway to another dimension, but they could at least try it

I thought of the flares too. In a movie like "House," you might actually see that happen, which is why I often find that sort of comedy/horror better than this sort of film
