so how the hell did he manage to become a demon? are we to assume that he was actually scratched and/or bitten during the attack from the bathtub? because he seems to change completely randomly and for no reason.

thats fine if the fall killed him but they make it a point to mention that demons can't use a dead body in the scene where Monica Keena reads the writings.

1. Got infected with his tussle with the demon in the bath tub which ultimately would have led to his transformation no matter what.
2. Because he was infected, he could no longer stay in the room with the spells and the house(?) and an act of of God/Devil/Demons caused him to fall through the floor.
3. He landed on the one or two skeletons still down in the basement?

Yep, I actually just assumed that while she was climbing down the rope a demon had gotten him in between his cries about his leg.
