The Exposition - Oh God. stop talking!

How the hell did these characters know all this back story?

They keep on talking about what happened in the mansion years ago. One character says something, then the story progresses, a second character adds more information about the deaths, story progresses, third character says...you get the picture.

And now I'm to the part where Monica Keena is talking about demons like she got her degree in demonology. She seems to know an awful lot considering she never said anything about them before. Where the hell is this exposition coming from? Seriously. Like another thread says, the screenwriters were idiots.

I can understand everyone knowing the story of what happened at the mansion since I assumed it was a big local legend. It was the same in the original. But I was baffled when Maddie started spouting out all this bullsh!t about how these demons were so badass they were kicked out of Hell and all. I mean, they didn't even attempt to explain her sudden expertise on demons, and specifically these demons. They could have included a 5 second clip of her having visions from Evangeline's ghost or something. It would have been a weak explanation, but better than none at all.

You do those drugs. You do that alcohol.

Yeah, an example of how bad the writing is in this film. She could have been shown reading a book at the start, had some back story briefly mentioned about a fixation she had with demons...anything that would work to explain her freakish amount of knowledge on the subject. Instead they assumed the audience would be cool with the average person having an encyclopedia-sized amount of knowledge on a random subject...yeah, not so much.

Legends kind of work that way, you hear a load of myths and rubbish and tend to fix pieces together and think of yourself as an expert.

Doesn't explain how clued up they were on demons though.

She did read a book in the house, just after the boob and lipstick scene.
