Was there any sort of a reason for them not deciding to climb the fence?
Or why they didn't just wait for daylight once they made it back into the room with the spells after being tricked earlier that it was morning when it really wasn't?
Or why she jumped off the roof to (fake) hang herself when it was already light out?
That was toward the end of the film because Rodger the only black guy in the film and Helen escaped climbing the fence to get away from all of the demons. That is how the original ended.
Ahhhhh. I see. I was thinking they should have just done it when they were searching around the yard for another gate, before anything demonic happened.
If I was trapped at some house that I didn't want to be at, regardless of demons, I'd just climb over the fence.
Exactly and so would I as well but that is not how they wrote the film script because I guess they did not want the film to be copying from the original. That is more than likely why they created a different version for the main character to survive. Only in the remake one person survives and the original film 2 people survive to live another day.
Judy, not Helen. Helen was the girl who freaked out when she saw her dead body in the mirror, then had her body thrown onto the car Roger was inside of.

When they first saw the gate was locked, they didn't know about the demons and thought they were just going to be staying in for the night. They didn't have much motivation to climb the fence. Later on, they were probably afraid to go outside with the demons there.

They did try to wait there, Colin fell through the floor.

I think it became light a few seconds after she jumped. Maybe she didn't know how long she had.

I get the distinct impression that besides the idea of not wanting to strictly copy the original, that this film was heavily edited and some of the continuity and logic was edited out. There are a few things that occur that seem a bit disjointed and I believe that is a result of editing or poor script supervision.
I try not to let stupid plot holes like that bug me when watching movies, especially horror films, but it did bug me a bit that they didn't even attempt to climb the wall.
It would have been pretty easy to get over the wall too. If you look in the very last scene you can clearly see a bench right next to the concrete wall that would have made it easy to grab the top of the wall to pull yourself over it. Heck, they could have at least made the wall a little higher to make it look like it would be harder to scale.
Oh well, it's a horror, so you can throw sense right out the window.
In the original movie, it was clearer about the fence, because they explicitly talk about the fence and show the whole fence and what happens when they try to get over it. This movie seemed to gloss over the difficulty the kids had trying to get out of the house AND the outside. It was filmed in a very strange and claustrophobic way!
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be as remakes go, but it did have some strange things...
Brent you beat me too it..They had ropes , furniture to pile up..GEEZ Couldn't the movie makers at least electrified the fence or put a spell on it? Ruined an otherwise awful movie (anyway) for me
I think the problem with the remake is that they added the drug dealing plot, That kind of ruined the movie because it makes you think "If he needs to get out and sell those drugs because his life depends on it Why not jump the fence?"
I think that was my problem with it. They added that plot (I have no idea why it had nothing to do with the rest of the movie) and made it so that Edward had to leave the house in a rush. the problem with adding that is that it becomes stupid that he doesn't jump the fence. If there was no drug dealing plot the jumping the fence problem would not be as evident.
Think of it this way, you have 7 people in a house on halloween that are drinking and thinking and making out and whatnot. If you were a guy in that party wouldn't you think about hooking up with someone? If you have no real reason to leave the jumping the fence would not be a problem. The guys are probably thinking about hooking up with the girls and the girls are too drunk to try to jump over a fence, I honeslt think it would have worked better if they didn't have the drug dealer looking for an exit. The demon attack would have been more of a surprise and they would want to leave when it is too late. But since the are making a point of him NEEDING to leave then it becomes obvious and stupid.
