The Dad in Bed

Was it ever explained why the dad was in the bed and under the covers with his children when the mom found the bite marks? I know it's supposed to create doubt that the dad is trustworthy, but I can't remember anything coming out if it.

I'm gonna restate my opinion that there was something not quite right with the dad from the get-go (I go off on him more on the "Confused about the ending" thread.)

(Aw, heck, here's what i wrote there)

I keep thinking about the dad, and all the "instructions" he gave, and the discussions he and Mom had about "abuse being carried on from generation to generation," and the scene where he is pretty much joining the kids in bed while they are biting each other (I know, I'm interpreting, but there was something strangely relaxed about his posture when the mom first came upon them)

First of all, what was back of the abuse comment? And second of all, was the weirdness of the dad's behavior an indication that he was somehow coaching the children to become killers? Maybe the exorcism didn't work because he was the one passing on the evil?

Seriously, we all agree, there's something wrong with that guy.

(Down thread) "And interesting about the biting that the kids do, early on in the movie (during the "Halloween" part) when the mother is talking to the father she says "did you just bite me?" "

I can't say I remember the wife saying the line "Did you just bite me?" It would help explain what the dad was doing. Maybe the dad was messed up, but not so much that he was trying to create little killers. Instead, his "Little games", got out of hand with his kids becoming little psychos instead of just indulging him in his sick sex games.

I definitely believe she asked one of the children if they bit her after they jumped out in the basement. I think the biting likely happened, then the dad (upset/concerned about his kids) wandered into their room, saw them in bed and in despair tried to cuddle them innocently and passed out. He had stated he had been drinking since 5pm that evening.

I truly think that was totally innocent but meant to become a tool for misconstruing.

In reference to the bites, perhaps the kids were bitten by something in the closet. The door did open on its own.

There were clever plot devices in this film, but it did seem to teeter between being a possession movie and being a movie about psychotic children.
