What difference does it make? RHPS crossed gender barriers in 1975 when it was released (and before that on stage), long before the term "transgender" was conceived. Closet doors SWUNG open and the drag culture came out of the shadows. Frank N Furter was a TRANSVESTITE. Get it? Laverne was born in a man's body, forchrissakes. Don't even get me started on the race questions - again, who gives a...
Now if you want to talk crap about Laverne's forced speaking accent as Frank, I'm all over that. Her singing and dancing were spot on, though. She was fabulous.
Almost every good or bad movie ever made has been re-made; often multiple times. It's never exactly the same. RHPS has probably been performed on stage hundreds of thousands of times, by thousands of performers all over the world. No play is ever the same night after night; no re-make is ever the same as the original. Get over it.
I didn't really have a huge problem with Laverne Cox's casting--I had problems with this remake as a whole, but in my opinion the casting was not a huge issue. That being said, however, transvestite and transgender are not actually the same thing. And while transgender is a relatively new term, they've been doing sex-change operations since the sixties, and in the '70s they were openly discussing it on network shows. When I was a kid I saw it mentioned on Trapper John, The Love Boat, and The Jeffersons--and I'm sure there were others as well.
Its supposed to be a man wearing women's clothing. A transvestite. Not transgender. My friends and I are RHPS fans and the only thing we liked about this one was the opening number. Laverne Cox is great! Just not as Frank. And what's up with her wardrobe!!!
Thats a complicated question. Some people are upset because it blurs two already confused identities. The trans community has a hard enough time getting people to take them seriously as is. Many older people legitamatley think Trans people just like dressing up in the opposite sexes clothing. And it is a deeply rooted cultural issue that has had a historical and lasting impact on the trans community.
Other people are not upset that Frank is played by a trans person but upset that Frank is played by a woman as a woman without any other changes which basically stripped the show of 90% of the gay content. Rocky without unappologetic homosexuality is not Rocky. Had Laverne played the role of Frank as a extremely feminine man (other woman have rocked the role this way) or had they changed Janet to Frank's primary target and changed Rocky to a woman who sleeps with Brad many of us would have had less issues.
Its something you'll get used to a mental mind *beep* can be nice!
not really(gonna check out orange is the new black now), but I give a F that they didn't bother changing the lyrics to "sweet transvestite" that bit is really jarring.
Yep. They needed to change the lyrics cause she's not a transvestite so why the heck is she singing about being a sweet transvestite who isn't much of a MAN by the light of the day. It makes absolutely no sense to sing that.
They should have taken sweet transvestite out and did a new song called sweet transgender.
Cheese Lady - You seem to be quite confused about the difference between a cross-dresser/transvestite and a transsexual/transgender person. You're not alone however!
Adam Lambert: quoted (try to decipher this!): "They actually asked me to look at the role of Frank-N-Furter. I was really flattered, and I thought, yeah, that could be quite fun. But with my schedule, it was just not looking likely. And I kind of felt like in 2016, to be cis and playing the role of a trans character, it felt inappropriate to me. In the ’70s, it was different. But nowadays we have such an amazing conversation that’s started about trans and gender in this world. I think casting Laverne Cox was so brilliant. It’s so appropriate, you know what I mean? And to re-imagine [the character], as well, because she’s entirely different." http://www.idolator.com/7627189/adam-lambert-new-songs-rocky-horror-friendship-with-kesha-interview He seemed to be under the impression that fishnets automatically make you a sex change or something! Moving on to Cox -
Laverne Cox: “she said “transvestite” is an “antiquated term that trans folks certainly don’t use” “Historically, the terms have changed [and] it doesn’t mean the same thing today that it meant in the 70s,” she says. “It’s not appropriate to refer to trans people as a transvestite [today], but it is [used here as] the character in that specific moment in history.” http://hellogiggles.com/laverne-cox-message-rocky-horror/
What the Flying F was that all about? Did she just erase Transvestites from the cultural map altogether? My many MTF trans friends, as well as cross dressers, transvestites, drag queens, female impersonators, gender queer and all-out transsexual friends have been having quite the discussion on this. The trans folks showing more worry that an actress who started to appear to be a trans icon for some people may be confusing other people's perceptions at the same time. “So, Cox is really just a dude with bewbs?” some might think.
And the “No play is ever the same night after night; no re-make is ever the same... “ argument is tired, simply because while the first half is more truthful it all depends on the play and maybe it's content but people do have a universal wish to see something traditionally related to the original work. Film remakes are too much to talk about, musical remakes would be better since there are fewer. The point is, at this point in film history they should be smarter not to schmuck them up SO badly!
It is like they want to sanitize transvestism because even in 2016 a predatory bisexual male transvestite who will bang the girlfriend and the boyfriend still makes people very, very uncomfortable.
Cox is a "safe" transsexual, just like Lambert is a "safe" gay male.
I find it hard to believe they don't know any better than what they said. They had to be spinning for the show.
You clearly don't get it yourself. She (Cox) is completely wrong for the part exactly because she is a transsexual. It's even worse than a genetic female playing the part, which could have maybe been adapted. Straight people don't know the difference, and that's okay, but they really shouldn't be telling others to "get over it". We're over it. It's over and done and Rocky Horror will never be made again, or made correctly. The sooner Cox is forgotten in this role, the better for everyone.
