Here's a great explanation of what went wrong with this interpretation.

Alot of people say "don't compare the two", or something about the new one being a re-imagined version. The problem is that this version can't seem to figure out which one it wants to be, a remake or a re-imagined version, so it kinda falls somewhere in the middle and fails at both. This article sums up perfectly what went wrong when they made this version:

It just fails.

At least Glee was open it was a tribute rendition.

Can you really re-imagine something that itself was a re-imagined version of Frankenstein mixed with the old B-movies about a young couple getting stranded in a sinister mansion on a stormy night?

And if they wanted to "re-imagine" it with a transgender instead of a transvestite they needed to take out the song "Sweet Transvestite" because it makes no sense for a transgender to sing it. They also needed to cut out Columbia's part in Time Warp, because unless Francesca Furter picked up Columbia dressed in drag as a dude that makes no sense, either.

I think you are confusing "re-imagined" with "influenced by". The storyline for RHPC was completely original with the themes you described, completely different.

As for the song lyrics, I'm not even sure the word "transgender" existed back then, but lets be honest here. The whole show is about sexual fluidity, as you can see frank seducing just about everyone on the show. I don't think they were so concerned about staying "PC" as they were with keeping such a pivotal song in the show.

What went wrong was a complete lack of a talented cast.

they made a safe, sweet teen version of Rocky horror that kids can enjoy

Imagine making a pg version of the movie Evil Dead for example.... what would that look like?

An evil dead movie FOR kids? I know this is a different genre but still. Imagine making a safe PG version of clockwork orange for kids to enjoy.. .wtf
