NEW VS OLD
I won't go into any late night movie to watch the new one, but the old one__ heck yeah
Tim Curry got it right the first time.

They're both good. Sure I like the first one more.
But the new one is important cause it can shine a new light on the classic and introduce a whole new audience to the original.
Nobody raps so I'm good.
The new one is too clean, too sanitized--it feels too teenybopper for my taste. But I suppose that's not surprising given Ortega.
shareit can shine a new light on the classic and introduce a whole new audience to the original.
Yes. People see this. Like it they might want to know what started it all.
Hate it. They might hear about the original being better and decide to give it a whirl.
I didn't feel like it downplayed the sexuality. But that's me.
It aired at 8:00 on network TV, so it had to downplay it. But that was a large part of the problem. When you take the raunch out of RHPS, when you clean it up and make it more family-friendly, you ruin it.
shareThe original used to play in the same network in the same time slot years ago around Halloween and thats how I got introduced to it.
The original is not all that raunchy.
Well, off the top of my head, in the original, we see Little Nell's breasts during her entire performance of "Regular Frankie Fan", we are treated to incest with Riff and Magenta, and Frank does not say "A mental mind GAME can be nice...."
The original also had some man on man action with Rocky and Frank (who hops on Rocky at the end of "I Can Make You A Man") and Brad and Frank.
"Our Art Is a Reflection of Our Reality"
Exactly. The responses and the props are a large part of what make this so awesome. A televised teenybopper version does not cut it. At all.
shareAND all of the people around you experiencing the same thing. This will never make it to the theaters, so what were they thinking?? But what I cannot fathom is how they have 12% gave it a ten. One star here. GRRRRR!

Well if you want to remake RHPS then don't air it at 8pm on network TV. It's a nonsense. Besides, has never the original movie been aired in prime time on network TV, ever? I can't believe that. Are audiences more prudish than they were 40 years ago? Then this is a problem.
What's next, a RHPS Disney cartoon for small kids were the characters are funny animal and there is no reference to sex whatsoever? :-)
I should mention that it aired at 7:00 CT here in the midwest!
it can shine a new light on the classic and introduce a whole new audience to the original.
Completely agree. Where I live they've been showing this at midnight in Norfolk since 1978.
shareThat's the year I started. Kids don't cotton to fake.
Politically correct: I'm just a sweet crossdresser from transgender Ro-o-mania! Hit it, YEAH!

Actually just yes.
What about all the people that don't live in LA?
What about the people in rural fly over states?
Your reply is smug and narrow-minded.
It's actually shown in quite a lot of places--not just LA. And when I was in college in '91 there were kids in North Carolina arranging carpools to go see it in my part of Virginia. And if you're too young to stay out past midnight on Saturday you're probably too young to see it anyway.
shareYes, ok, it introduces a whole new audience to the original, but it does so very poorly. The only thing almost bearable is Ivy Levan's rendition of Science Fiction Double Picture. Everything else is very bad, to be honest.
shareDisappointing! I watched with an open mind but found it weak and pointless.
Why does this generation need their own Rocky!?! I was not around when the first one came out but still managed to appreciate the original film. All that need be done is show the original. Felt like Psycho 1998 all over again!

Agreed 110%.
The flat-brimmed baseball cap is the modern-day dunce cap.
OLD VS NEW:
Old: Frankenfurter is a Transvestite- a male who identifies as male, but likes both genders who gets off on dressing in female clothing.
New: Frankenfurter is Transgender- born male who got a sex change and identifies as a female and dresses as a female but likes both genders.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old: Columbia is more of a teeny bopper groupie tap dancer with red hair and definitely seems to be a big fan of Eddie and really did love him and Frankenfurter.
New: Columbia is more of an Avril Lavigne-esque groupie with rainbow hair and doesn't quite seem to be a big fan of Eddie and didn't really seem to love him or Frankenfurter. And, what the heck is up with her frickin blue tongue?!!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old: Dr. Everett Scott is supposed to be a German/Nazi scientist, as implied by the VON SCOTT mentioned in the Stage Show/Movie and he has the accent.
New: Dr. Scott is called Von Scott, but definitely does not convince me he's German.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old: Eddie is campy as heck, but definitely does a good job of convincing me that he's a rocker "rebel" and I could actually see him riding a motorcycle and whatnot like "rebel with a cause". He also shows a lot of chemistry with Columbia.
New: As much as I love Adam Lambert, he just doesn't do a good job of convincing me that he's a rocker or a rebel and definitely does not seem like he'd ride a motorcycle and I see no chemistry between him and Columbia.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old: The Transylvanians seemed like more upper-class weirdos who were all emotionless and interested in Dr. Frankenfurter and his work and convinced me that they were aliens and their party seemed more in tune to the mood of the castle and just fit in with Frank and the others.
New: The "Transylvanians" were more what I would consider "hipsters" or "ravers" and less so what I would assume were aliens. Their party seemed less like what I would see Frank have and more like a "Kiki": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGCD4xb-Tr8
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old: The "Toucha Toucha Touch Me" song and scene definitely gave me the feel that Janet and Rocky were innocents wanting to become creatures of the night with each others and was a lot of fun and moved along nicely from them flirting to getting it on.
New: The "Toucha Toucha Touch Me" song and scene were frickin' awkward. They giggled and jumped on the bed together and went from being in the box he was made in, to a bedroom with a bed, and back to the box.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old: Uncensored and Raunchy for its time. Characters dressed scantily and weren't afraid to have a little bit of boobage show.
New: Censored. They ruined the Planet Schmanet Janet song by having to cut out F|U|C|K in "It's something you'll get used to. A mental mind-f|u|c|k can be nice!" among other things.

This version pales in comparison to the original -- like RHPS-lite. The acting is nowhere near as good, the singing is definitely not as good (other than perhaps Janet and Eddie), nor are the costumes, sets, etc. And Cox as F-N-F just didn't do it for me. Frank needs to be a MAN dressed as a sexy woman (or an androgynous woman who looks like a man dressed as a sexy woman). All that cleavage was distracting and, frankly, inappropriate for the character. And where was the audience participation for the TOAST?!?!? I thought seeing this remake would be like "going home" but it was like going to a Disney version of home, with much less attention to detail.
shareIt was surprisingly good. I enjoyed it for what it was - a fun remake. These movies are not Emmy/Academy Award material. Just overall fun. What to compare each character this is my thoughts on them:
Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter- did a good job. I don't think any actor could have replaced what Tim Curry brought, but Laverne did a good enough job.
Loved this Riff-Raff as much as Richard O'Brien.
Didn't care for this Magenta. they should have picked a more eccentric actress like the original.
The Brad and Janet actors were good. Better looking than the originals too.
Liked this Columbia alot more. The original was more annoying.
Liked this Eddie alot. Seemed a little more believable as a former sex object for Franken.
Liked this Rocky more. Had a little more personality/emotion.
Tim Curry did ok as Narrarator. It needed a little more though.
I was wondering why Tim Curry was so lethargic and just slow seeming, and it didn't seem to be on purpose. I found out here on the boards that he'd had a stroke. It's really saddening because even in his older age, Tim Curry was very lively and full of character. I saw him most recently playing an old kidnapper in some random cop show, he was great and at full form. It seems this stroke definitely took his liveliness.
shareFirst of the worst...it's a TV MOVIE! This is NOT the way to learn the dances, quips, props, and all of the wonderful bits. This is NOT even half decent. What a mistake this was.
I used to take RHPS virgins to the show...SO much fun! This is not going to even make it with the younger generation. Their friends still go to the original midnight show like good fans.

As much as I love Ms. Cox, she is no Tim Curry. The original "Sweet Transvestite" was raw, beautiful and uninhibited. Tim Curry owned it. The new version? Not so much. It's too pretty, too self aware, too covered up. I only got through about half of the remake, whereas I've watched the original dozens of times.
The one good thing about the remake: what it lacks in style, it makes up for in vocal quality. It's just too bad all of these excellent voices were brought together for this terrible idea of a movie.
