Laverne Cox was trying too hard to be Tim Curry

I probably would have enjoyed it more if she had tried to make the role her own, instead of trying to do a cheap imitation of Tim Curry. But then again, everyone else was pretty bad too.

She was having fun in the role. That's all that matters really.

That would be true if she wasn't on national television trying to entertain millions of people. But I'm glad she had a good time.

reply

No, that's really not all that matters. What matters is giving a good performance. She did not.

Then you're obviously missing the entire point of Rocky Horror. Rocky Horror was never meant to be some high production musical. It's about the interaction between the actors dressed as these characters and audiences having fun. The amateur singing is intentional. Don't believe me? Richard O'Brien will tell you the exact same thing. Hell, people who worked on the 1973 original London stage play even criticized the 1975 film version for being too polished and professional.

Well dangit. I love to sing along to musical theater cast songs and if having fun "is all that matters" then cast me, (a 50 year-old man) as Sandy in the next "Grease" production. I know all the songs and the moves and I promise you I'll have fun. Even better, my singing isn't any better than Cox's but thank Zod for studio re-mixing.

So yes, she tried TOO hard to be Tim's Frank when she/he or it was the farthest thing from any Frank concept ever conceived. Many on-stage Franks walk that delicate line between channeling Curry and putting their own personal imprint on Frank. I know I did when I played the role. But fer chrissake, was this the best they could come up with, a woman with no singing or acting talent, no idea how to use subtle visual clues, no range control to her voice, and the least amount of stage presence ever seen on TV since the Olsen twins were two.

No, it's really not all that matters. It's great for her but it's not enough to make it good for the rest of us.

That was this movie's problem. Everyone was trying too hard to play like the original actors. They didn't put their own spin on the characters at all. Actually everything in this movie was trying to be too much like the original. It really took me out of the movie because of that.

reply

I don't know what you watched, but what I saw was every character putting their own spin on the original characters, and most of them changing the very essence of the characters so much that they are unrecognizable.

The only plus I saw was at least Cox made an attempt to create a tribute performance, and it was one of the few, the very few, redeeming qualities.

I still think this was horribly miscast, regardless.

A tribute is supposed to still show some semblance of resemblance.

Laverne was playing everybody from Tina Turner to Britney to Nikki to Norma Desmond.

I told my daughter the dancing looked like Tina Turner. I kept waiting for her to start singing Proud Mary.

Casting her has taken away a bit of the creepiness factor. You have to know her personal back story to know she's transgender. If you don't know that about her, it just seems like a woman running the place.

It's a HORROR movie based on the Frankenstein myth and you want to take away the creepiness factor?

Wait, are you calling transvestites creepy? That's wrong, man. I have many friends, drag queens, female impersonators, transvestites and Transsexuals and calling any of the creepy isn't cool.

But to your last point, where's the shock? It's the type of show where we need a little shock, such as the creepy castle, the cobwebs, dancing Transylvanians, bloody towels, the creation of life, the axe murder, the bisexual seduction, the cannibalism, the sadistic kidnapping, more murders...?

Man if you were creeped out about ANYthing in the RHPS you need to reconsider watching something tamer. I hear "Goosebumps" gives you mild Halloween frights.

It did seem as if she was trying to immitate Tim. Problem is she is not a very good actress, I understand it was supposed to be camp. But it had no style. Also, she CAN NOT sing. It was painful.

And why are they casting a woman as a transvetite? It seems a disservice to the woman she has become.

reply

She was decent after "Eddie" when she just acted like herself.

reply

I agree, she did a great job, but I don't feel like she put any of herself in the role.

reply

i also think she was trying too hard to be tim with the the way she spoke especially

her singing voice i nowher a good a tims was

"I'll be there for you"
