Right from the start Rob was being a douchebag. When they knocked the killer out the first time he couldn't even kill the guy, all he had to do was plunge the knife into his heart.

He didn't have the weapon in his hand. He was choking out Kathy, which was why Rob had to give back the gun. As was stated, he was too much of a punk to do the deed when he had the chance; what makes anyone think he's going to defend his wife?
