surprised!

Just found out will smith doing this story! im surprised because a couple of weeks back there was an article saying he would never make a movie about slavery!

reply

He talks about it in this interview. Was this the article?

"I've always avoided making films about slavery," Smith, 53, said. "In the early part of my career… I didn't want to show Black people in that light. I wanted to be a superhero. So I wanted to depict Black excellence alongside my white counterparts. I wanted to play roles that you would give to Tom Cruise."

Smith's stance has evolved as he now stars in the upcoming film Emancipation as Peter, a real-life runaway slave who fought to evade his hunters through the Louisiana swamp in his journey to join the Union army. Peter is known for the photo of his heavily scarred back.

"This was one that was about love and the power of Black love," Smith said of choosing to make Emancipation. "And that was something that I could rock with. We were going to make a story about how Black love makes us invincible."

Yes it is.Im glad will changed his opinion because he is a talented actor and although many movies have already been made about slavery its an important issue in the history of the u.s.

Lets hope this will be good.

Trailer looked interesting.

reply

it did!glad to see will in something again!

It looked cheap to me, the muted colors looked like a filter from an Asylum production or something a new filmmaker would just drop into the timeline to make his project look more 'cinematic'.

Even though the trailer is only a couple of minutes long I couldn't buy Smith playing this character... let's see if the actual performance is good.

Fuqua is an extremely talented filmmaker.

Will Smith can't pick a winner these days to save his life. I will go in with low expectations.

I do remember he turned down Django Unchained back in the day for some stupid reason. Obviously that, like many other Tarantino films, was an alternate view of actual history.

But here he is in 2022 trying to whip up another Oscar-bait film.

reply

If I recall correctly he said he passed on Django because he felt that Dr. King Schultz was the actual hero of the film and not Django.

reply

Hmm, thanks. I can see why he maybe perceived that, but I'll bet scarcely any moviegoers left the theater with that impression.

reply

Cool.
