*Calling It Now: Best Picture Nominee (Bump Thread When I'm Right)*

I got a sick sense for these types of things. I correctly called several movies in the past that were largely unheard of and went on to be nominated for tons of Oscars like Avatar, Titanic, Silver Linings Playbook, Crash, and Up in the Air.

I haven't even watched the trailer or anything either.

Why will this be nominated?

2 words:

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper

The awards are basically politics at its finest. God forbid they ever nominate movies like Fruitvale Station or X-Men Days of Future Past the whole industry will blow apart.

So yeah, save a spot for Serena because it it going to take up a nomination spot of a movie more deserving.

P.S. huge JL fan. Have seen all her movies from Winter's Bone to Hunger Games 3. I want to marry her lol. But Zoe's still hotter.

Disagree about politics being a big issue. Mainly since the AMPAS are not one single person so different people have different allegiances/friends/political views etc.

And hey imho they do nominate movies like those two, just not very frequently - they need to be REALLY good (or by famous directors).

and I really hope Serene gets nominated bc then it likely means Susanne Bier has made another very good movie.

None of the movies you mentioned were largely unheard of. All were high profile projects with award winning directors and cast members.

I don't think this will be nominated for acting, possibly cinematography or tech awards but I don't think either Jen or Brad will be...However, if Jen gives an outstanding performance as the BFI website describes it, Maybe she'll get another nod, who knows, I mean Meryl gets nominated every damn year so why not?

If the script is faithful to the book, it won't give her much to work with. She shines when she gets to play complex characters showing a range of emotions in different situations, and in the book, her character was basically a one note cartoon.

Mind you (spoilers ahead), it was a great character in terms of being over the top evil like a super-villain, but Serena the character has no depth. At least in the book.

That's true, she was one dimensional and driven by one thing - pure evil...But you never know with Jen, she can really surprise us with what she can do with this poorly formed character...I hope she gets noticed, if not by the Academy then by other award circuits.

What Jen will do, one of her many intuitive gifts, is convey with a look what couldn't be written in 100 words. I hope Susanne Bier recognizes that and the script lets her do that rather than try to do it with dialogue alone.
The most dangerous and menacing people are the quietest. You can see it in their eyes. That's why I'm so looking forward to Jennifer's performance. She could be the perfect Serena.

Did you see my post on Jen's board? That face she has, that look in her eyes...I totally agree!!
