What were these people thinking?

It seemed like nobody was trying. Not Cameron Crowe, as a writer or director, not any of the actors. Everybody seemed to be going through the motions. Did they just do the movie so they could hang out in Hawaii for a while? It just made me think of an Adam Sandler movie where nobody seems to care if it's any good or not, they're just there for fun. Not what I expect from these people! I hope Crowe makes a big comeback at some point. I assume the talent is still there.

Hmm, I liked the directing and acting. The Hawaiian backdrop is amazing culturally to me.

I agree!

What the hell did I just watch?

Exactly how I felt. Cooper, Murray, and Stone were awful. The latter two also miscast, especially Stone. The script was absurd.

The hacked email quote from Amy Pascal (then the co-chair of Sony Pictures Entertainment) in the Trivia section explained exactly what they were thinking: that a capable director and popular actors are more important elements than the quality of the script; a second-rate story is irrelevant if the talent is sufficient.

I feel perversely encouraged that SOMEONE who was high enough in the Hollywood hierarchy to greenlight projects ultimately recognized her own folly. Of course, she no longer occupies the position, so I guess that fallacy will continue to be the standard working theory.

P.S. This must be why I keep hearing we're in the "New Golden Age of Television"--with hundreds of options available to viewers on a 24/7 basis, you need to be telling a tale that's nothing short of riveting if you want to attract a sizable audience. Explains why I have a DVR that's full of more interesting stuff than my local Redbox.
