Okay, I'll be the odd one out here. (I like it.)

They did a good job setting tone. Right away, I like the Alice and Rebecca characters. Immediately, I don't want Alice to be left alone in that house. I do genuinally get creeped out at the house itself. Good job, set designers. Nice acting from Brittany Murphy when she is deathly afraid of someone being in the house for the first time. Good performance by Thora Birch as the uncomfortable, sad housewife Lucy who is becoming slowly worn down and dillusioned with her controlling husband. I also like how the Rebecca character is a bit mysterious. I thought for a few seconds here and there that she could be in on it. (The actor, Tammy Blanchard, confirmed in the "making-of" featurette that she had intentionally played the character that way. I like that I picked up on it, because it was subtlely done.)

I don't know why people always need a blown-up Hollywood mega twist ending. I've seen other peoples' "re-writes" here in the comments section, and to be honest, those are kind of predictable too, albeit fun. The simplistic ending is creepier in a way, because it is something that could happen to anyone. The power of the mind is strong, and we all have a dark side.

Straight-forward story. Simple set design touches, lighting, musical score, and good acting to create a creepy atmosphere. In the end, it is repressed trauma in a writer's mind playing itself out. It was genuinally creepy at various times. I liked the acting. I liked the characters. It kept my attention the entire time.

I liked it. I also like the added touch of the relationship between Rebecca and Alice and how that is never fully spoon-fed to us.

I liked it up until the last 15 minutes I guess. I did like the creepy, spooky mood. I am typically not overly critical - I'm not a hater who knows everything there is to know about movies - I'm in it for fun. However, I do think this one managed to shoot itself in the foot in the end. I definitely agree with you regarding the atmosphere.

I like it too. Not a masterpiece but not as bad as people say it is. I gave it a strong 6/10 stars. :) Brittany was perfect for this part.

I found some fans of this flick so i will ask - why the 'R' rating? I just saw this on one of the cable networks (uncensored) and see it was rated R. But, why?
No sex or nudity, no extreme violence or gore, no bad language, not really even any 'sensitive' subject matter or strong religious theme..........any idea why it got hit with this rating? Seems a little harsh for a clearly (to me) PG-13 movie.

I totally agree bornskeptic why this movie even needed the R rating or any rating at all especially since it went " Direct-to-Video " according to Wikipedia  . Thanks bornskeptic for pointing this out and for your reply  .

Also agree with all " the odd ones out here group " this movie was great  . Loved the house too very beautiful and spacious  .
Thanks MirshGoddess for your subject post  .

I like this movie too; it was strong on atmosphere and that house alone creeped me out no-end!

I also thought it was a very strong performance by Brittany Murphy -- one of her best. I'm surprised to learn it was straight-to-video release as I totally felt this as a theater release upon watching it. It's a quality chiller/thriller.
