Clearly written by a man for men because . . .

Ray and Scott, who are flawed in many ways, have sex with countless women. They don't even have to put in much effort.

Ah yes - the fantasy of any 50 year old man with thining hair, growing bellies, and prostate issues.

More ageist comments, sweet!

Ah to be an ignorant twentysomething like you again... too stupid to know what I didn't know, and no experience or respect for those who do.

Enjoy the bliss while you can, life is going to give you a nice big bitch slap soon enough. The worst part is when you'll go back and read stuff you wrote when you were young, it will make you wince and more than a little embarrassed. But you'll know why you did it at the time, and maybe chuckle a little.

As a woman in my early 50s, I actually agree with the OP, no matter what age she/he might be. Imagine three older women in the title roles, women who were honest about their ages. Unless they were very attractive and in perfect shape, most viewers would not consider that they would be able to attract younger men, or even men near their age. It would be considered ridiculous and an older woman's far-out fantasy.

I don't care...I'm female & would rather watch this all male show than some all "chick" show....I hate those!!! I don't even go to see "chick" movies...blech!

I want to watch men & find out what makes them tick & why they act the way they do...I always end of with "Terry" & would love to find a "Joe"!

reply

nw_sea, I'm pretty sure you just described "Sex and the City".

Bakula's in fantastic shape. I've never quite understood the attraction women felt about his "droopy dog" face, but it's been clear since the 80's that a large percentage of women find it appealing, it still looks much the same, just a bit more weathered.

As to Joe, as has already been pointed out (and promptly ignored), we've seen him with all of three women on the show, if you include his now ex-wife (who we never see him have sex with).

And he's rich (not mega, but moderately). And in pretty decent shape himself for almost 50, he's not as "ripped" as Terry, but he's still pretty svelte. And I've always been told that women are more interested in what a guy is like and how he'll treat her than what he looks like. Probably just another evil lie that women tell us, right? :)

Someone above wrote that the OP is a twenty year old laughing at middle aged men depicted in this show.

I'm the OP and middle aged as I laugh at how middle aged men are so insecure about what I wrote.

Looks like those that agree with me are women who see things a little more clearly rather than the majority of men who want to believe in the fantasy.

It's ok - believe in what you want - just don't be too dissapointed if you find yourself not getting the same results as Joe.

reply

Are you middle aged and stupid?

Joe - 2 women in two years. Is this what you consider a "lot of action"?

reply

They condense the show as most shows do. Yes its been two years in TV world so you are right.

reply

It's the 70s all over agin, my friend. If ya ain't gettin' laid, ya ain't trying.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

Bakula's definitely not bad-looking for his age, but even still it's unrealistic so many young, good-looking girls would want to sleep with him. Same with Joe, and this isn't JUST because of their ages and looks, but also because of other things. Terry's a hopelessly struggling actor who can't even afford to pay for his apartment (hence why he acts as a maintenance man) and is still a bit immature (but not in an annoying way, don't get me wrong), and Joe is a gambling addict who still has issues with his ex-wife, not to mention has a clear lack of confidence in many situations. Again, not trying to put them down; I'm just saying it would have to take more than "looking pretty good for your age" to get laid so much by all these hot chicks.

And he's rich (not mega, but moderately).

From owning a small party supply store???

I've noticed women are just as shallow as men, though they might ALSO, at least sometimes, place more value on non-physical characteristics than men. So what you were told is partly true and partly bullsh*t.

Men are attracted to physical aspects of a woman which fade by the time they turn 40 or so. Women on the other hand find aspects of a man attractive that flourish as he gets older. Hence it's not that ridiculous a notion to see a 50 year old get laid.

Right, and the world is going to end in 2012. Seriously, why do people believe in such stereotypical bullsh*t? I personally have seen VERY few younger girls with older guys outside of Hollywood who weren't golddiggers or "escorts".

Btw OP is clearly too stupid to see this. And too stupid to realize that most don't peak sexually until a bit past their youthful prime.

reply

@nw_sea

You mean like Sex and the City?

And btw...you are completely wrong. Probably not getting any yourself? It's totally believable a guy like Terry is a womanizer and also gets younger women from time to time and it's also totally believable Joe will attract the woman he attracts and then is totally awkward with.

Not even responding to the OP. :| Yeah of all shows on tv Men of a Certain Age is "a male fantasy"...

reply

Evidently you have never watched Sex and the City.

In any event, not all fifty-year old men have pot bellies or prostate problems.

reply

I think it's a nice message to send that sex doesn't stop after 50. I'n over 50 and I still have sex and I'm nowhere near as good looking as Scott Bakula or Ray Romano for that matter. I also think you're exaggerating a little bit...these characters are not having sex with COUNTLESS women. Yes, Terry is a bit of manwhore, but Joe has only begun his second relationship since his divorce.

reply

no the show sub writers are women , not men, maybe the reason the guys have so much sex is because the women writers want to have sex , , this is grey's anatomy with men instead of women ,i like all 3 guys but , this to me is not a great show but as usual here on imdb you idiots make it more than what it is , btw women when men talk they discuss sports most , sex would be 4th or 5th

reply

Sports? That's just as stereotypical as thinking all men talk about is sex. In my circle of friends we tend to talk most about work, the social obligations of family life (i.e. the meetings, games, and get togethers that we have to attend because of our kids and spouse,) politics, etc. Sports comes in right above sex and both are waaaay down on the list.

reply

Well duh, everyone knows that women love flawed men! If I had a dollar for every flawed man that me or my friends have been attracted to in living memory...

reply

We don't have to guess about the writers. The "combined details" page for each show summarizes the writing credits for the overall show.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242441/combined

Only 3 of the episodes were written by a woman, and only two were directed by one. All the rest are by men, although most of their profiles don't list their ages. Ray Romano himself has written 15 of them, which is only one shy of the majority.

reply

lol. Womaen of that age ain't dead and there are plenty that are still in the hunt. And they're so.....appreciative.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

What exactly is wrong with a man show written by men for men? You girls have idiot shows like Sex and the City. Shut the Eff Up.

Who am I kiddin' who am I foolin' when they be like "What's up Fatlip?" and I say "Coolin'."

Women have three networks of shows:Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, Oxygen, and the new Oprah Winfrey Network...so make that four networks dedicated to women.

Oh My! One show dealing with men's issues that hardly anyone even knows about because they split the season.

HOW AWFUL!!!!

reply

ok.. this is a bit guarded.. and a bit defensive.. and mostly obnoxious.. but jac does have a FAIR point.. there are SEVERAL channels related to JUST women.. NONE NADA.. zip, zero ZILCH.. for men.. now stuff like Playboy.. ESPN.. whatever.. Spike? Claims to be for/about men.. but mostly are just superficial stuff..

Women have had shows ABOUT being women.. in older age (The Golden Girls) the mid age? (Sex and the City).. Men of a Certain Age.. seems most.. unique.. in that its about a group of GUY friends.. and how they deal with their lives.

There aren't even shows about YOUNGER GUYS, ala Sex and the City.. and if there WERE.. it would be labelled as sexist and mysoginistic (wow I hope I spelled that one right). This show.. CLOSEST resembles.. "Manchild" from the UK.. although taken much more SERIOUSLY.. I think I even made this observation to a friend..

whereas Manchild has some of the same aRCHETYPES.. the successful divorcee the manwhore (although.. he was WEALTHY.. and played with aplomb by Anthony Stewart Head).. it was a FUN.. but mostly shallow show... where this would take that IDEA and give those characters real depth.

and let's not even get into the US remake of "Manchild" that ShowTime did. just plain AWFUL.. (good cast.. but just plain AWFUL).

seriously though. check out "Manchild" on BBC.. CHARACTER wise.. you'd be kind of surprised how similar some of them are...
