The spirit of the maze

Ok - its just a movie and a pretty poor one at that but...
the Unicorn blade was supposed to only be taken out of the maze by a true hero. In fact, that was emphasised by the spirit in the heart of the maze.
But then not only does the spirit of the maze let Thaddeus take the sword - perhaps the worst questing knight ever in history - but the spirit of the maze basically talks him into it...
So, I guess my issue is, how craven and crass must that dead guy have been if Thaddeus was worthy and he wasn't?

"They who... give up... liberty to obtain... safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

It's what's deep in your heart ready to be unleashed, not necessarily how you present yourself. He needed the right stimulation to be a hero.

In the end, Okonkwo threw the Cat.

The Spirit of the Maze actually tested him in his worthiness. I suspect if he took the spirit on his offer to simply go home and be the next king and let his brother die than he would have been killed. Because Thaddeus chose his brother over his own desires it made him worthy.

I agree. He told the spirit he was no hero and he would just go if it did nothing to him. He didnt care about his brother or his bride etc. However the spirit tested him and reminded him of what was happening. Its like owning a gun for self defense... You HOPE you will be able to pull that gun and fire it if someone comes at you, but you just dont known for sure. You may run or you may panic. When he was confronted with the seriousness of the situation, he stayed and fought.
