They shot the movie with China being the invader. They went back post production and made it North Korea. It was political, China was complaining about being made the bad guy. China as the foe makes sense. If you set it up in a way that its in the near future, with a demobilized US Armed Forces and a steadily building PRC. If its well written it actually makes more sense than the 1984 version plot wise.
On the current track 1/3 of the Marine Corps will go away mostly with the 3rd MARDIV which will fold eventually, ironically in Asia. In the US Army we are facing a 2 Brigade Combat Team model across the board with all Divisions eventually. Something the 1st ID and 2d ID have already converted to. 1st Armored, 1st Cav, 3rd and 4th ID and 10th MD will follow suit soon. The 82d and 101st are likely the only Divisions that will maintain 3 BCTs along with 2 indy Brigades. Thats a loss of 7 Brigades since the height of the mid 2000s. We are talking about nearly 1/4 or more of our combat power going away compared to just 10 years ago. In 1984 comparitively the Army alone had 2 times the divisions, 8 indy Brigades and no less than 4 Armored Cavalry Regiments. We are facing dire times readiness wise. 5 more years of the current trending and China may very well be able to take us on regionally or in our own backyard with help.
