Brilliant 'new' Herzog

I am still catching up on Herzog, there is still much left to see, but I treasure most of what I've seen so far. The only Herzog I disliked entirely was the Nesse film.

I just rented this on DVD and as is so often the case, the features equal in appeal to the film, specially with directors such as Herzog who lets us into his incredibly tortuous poetic mind and lets us share not only in the beauty but also in the process, becoming a complete package. The casting and texture, as usual are incredible talents of his.

If you have a chance, I highly recommend renting the DVD for an additional reason: a short called Plastic Bag http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1504691/. Never has a short packed so much beauty, life, sadness, poetry and truth in so few minutes. Not a Herzog creation, but in spirit maybe so, as he's the narrator.

The entire short can be watched online.

The DVD is still worth it, though.

Yeah Herzog will single handedly salvage American cinema - both Bad Lieutenant and My Son My Son are some of the best US films of the last 5 years for sure.

Also - Michael Shannon shoulda won an Oscar for the lead performance. The bugger´s amazing.

The Incident at Loch Ness isn't a "Herzog film". He just acted in it.

Look again... he wrote it:

It's Zak Pen's film. It's obvious when you listen to the commentary. Maybe Werner wrote a scene here or there, but the concept of the film is entirely Zak Pen's.

I thought it was pretty bland. It was like Herzog was trying to make a documentary with a script and actors which to me flattened any of the drama that could possibly be felt by the audience. The endless explanations for Shannon's neurosis gave me the feeling that I was watching a anthropology documentary on the nature of psychopaths. It was boring, dull, and ultimately lacked any real movie-ness or drama. In turn the acting was also boring, dull and dramaless.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!
