Would 'bleak' stories like this still rise to the top today??

Watched this version of Jane Eyre and I was reminded of how bleak and 'silent-suffering' this kind of story was. This story seems to get told every 2 or 3 years. Would such a story survive today and make it in the Best Seller list??

I don't think bleakness is a problem for modern audiences, but 'silent-suffering' certainly is. Today's heroes are the ones who speak up, and the ones who "are themselves". Thinking about what to say before saying it, and censuring your emotions in a struggle to become a better person is highly out of fashion.
