Who was he planning on marrying?!? Who was he making preparations to marry (buying jewels, trip to Europe etc) Miss Ingram? And then during the "my spirit addresses your spirit" conversation with Jane, he changes his mind and proposes to her instead? Was he initially hoping she would stay and be his mistress? What the hell?! I would not accept that kind of proposal!
shareHe was never intending to marry Blanche Ingram, he only wanted Jane to believe that he was in order to draw her out and get her to admit (both to him and to herself) that she had feelings for him. It's pretty manipulative, but it did work.

This film is good, but two hours just isn't long enough to fit in events, let alone motivation. Try some of the TV mini-series. But, best of all, read the book.
