This was obviously set back in the 70's and early 80's so I'm quite confused as to why they were using the term African American??? That term didn't become popularized until the PC 90's. I grew up in the 80's and 90's and only heard black. I was confused by this. Anyone else?
yeah I'm a white guy and I always just say black, they call me white, fine with me, I figure that by now we don't need to call each other, "irish-american" or "italian-american", or "african-american", we've all been here long enough to just be considered american, now "mexican-american" is a different case since they're entering the country everyday, if you're born here then you're american..period, I wish that's the way it was
"the day I tried to live, I learned that I was alive"
One cannot tell someones heritage based on their skintone. However it's usually very easy to identify someones race by skin color and facial features. Blacks are really only prominent on one continent, Africa. Neither Caucasians or Blacks were natives of the Americas when colonists took over.
African-American is not an offensive term, but yes, it is better just to say black. However, if someone called me black the way Ron uses it in this movie I would take great offense to it. It's all about the context used, and even though he didn't use it in hate, such idiocy would just be more than my shoulders can bear.
