Does Cruise really do the stunt outside the tower?

IMDB trivia for this movie says that Cruise did the stunts (no body double) for the scenes when he scales the outside of the Dubai tower. I find this hard to believe. Do they mean that he did the stunt on a set that is a mockup of the tower or did Cruise truly do the stunt on the actual tower?

reply

On the actual tower. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oOTDSk_nZ4

There are more extensive behind the scenes documentaries that explain the various safety protocols that had to be followed in order to shoot there.

Thanks for the link. Wow! That takes some guts! I gotta give Tom some serious credit for taking on that stunt himself.

reply

That why I'm a fan. Tom Cruise works his butt off when he makes a movie...He does nearly all his (very dangerous) stunts...

reply

Say what you want about his marriages or Scientology, but the guy has never phoned it in for a movie. Not even DeNiro or Pacino can say that.

I remember for "Color of Money," he bought an actual Balabushka cue and practiced 8 hours a day at home until he could pull off all of Vincent's trick shots credibly and with a minimum of retakes.

That was also when I'd learned how he buffed up for "Taps" and softened up for "Risky Business."

Cruise has always been a 110% kinda guy.

It's a shame his personal life has managed to eclipse his very impressive dedication to the craft.

reply

Agreed. His promoting of Scientology really irks me but damn, the dude nails every single movie he has been in. Its a shame the man has never won his Oscar. To me he is the best actor of his era.

? So you're saying he didn't do those stunts?

reply

Hehe, ikr. Without seeing some extensive footage (outside of that clip), it's not easy to tell whether they had faked filming (and how much of it) at the tower. =)

reply

Holy *beep* I thought it was CGI! damn, that's one hell of a stunt - running down the side of the Dubai Tower... AT 51 YEARS OF AGE! Massive respect to Cruise, the guy has serious balls of steel.

Yes, but they were ghost safety protocols.

Same for MI2, when Ethan is climbing the cliff Tom Cruise did that stunt himself as well no stunt doubles.

reply

He also jumped up and down on Oprah's sofa without the aid of a safety net...

But seriously, the guy deserves respect. I always thought it was a crazy double who did all these stunts, so I was shocked when I realised it was actually Cruise who did these.

Yes he will have had been harnessed and the wires CGI'd out, but fair play to the guy. You wouldn't have ever caught me up that tower.

reply

Actually he wasn't harnessed in, not any extra harnesses anyway. The way the stunt looks on film is how they actually shot it. He didn't wear an extra harness that had extra wires or anything, I was shocked when I saw the making of it.

I believe the guys who were the MOST nervous on the entire set would be the Scientologists. They would lose their most precious asset if anything happened to him.

I can imagine David Miscavige (head of Scientology) having a massive argument with Cruise trying to stop him from risking his life like that.

LMAO! Seriously though, the guy's awesome for doing those stunts, in all of the M:I films, he does many of his own stunts.

I get dizzy from watching the scene. Even if he did only parts of the stunts there (have to see the whole making-of) - respect to his dedication.

Yes...

While I am not sure if TOM did everything, as there may have been one or two shots with a stunt guy for something that may have been really dangerous... That is no CGI, or blue screen set work there... It's a real man harnessed to the side of the building...

In the latest film, Rogue Nation, that is also Tom Cruise harnessed to the side of the plane while it takes off...

The lengthy documentaries on the Blu-Rays for both movies confirm that these were real stunts, Mostly performed by TOM.

Very Impressive. I love Tom's movies for his hard work and dedication.

(There is no way I would do stuff like that.)

reply

He had harnesses for the Burj hotel stunt and the plane, but he didn't have them for the cliff scene in the second one. Although I imagine there was plenty of safety netting around underneath him. There's no way in hell the insurance company would let him do that stunt with zero safety protocols.

And to the idiots claiming it was CGI, they have actual YouTube footage of him doing it. Complete with a camera on a crane behind him filming it.
