Rating?

Wasn't the rating like 8.0 or 7.9 around there? Recently the original Svedish version came on Netflix, did that influence it?

I don't think it ever got that high. It had to work its way up to where it is now due to LTROI fans voting it zero the instant the voting opened.

I don't understand why people automatically think remakes are going to be bad. I mean, Carrie didn't even exist yet. And I even gave Carrie a chance. This is one of the best remakes ever made, up there with True Grit and True Lies. I swear it had at least in the high 7's...

True Lies was a remake? I didn't know that.

I also loved True Grit. Heck...I love both versions of that one. Nothing wrong with retelling a story. We've been doing that for thousands of years. This new idea that a story is only supposed to be told once by one storyteller is odd and goes against what storytelling has always been about.

Yeah it was some *beep* French movie called "La Totale" or something. It's not a direct remake it's pretty loose.

Well you could argue that the fact that there's a rather sudden surge of remakes in the last ~20 years or so could be representative of a decrease in original ideas.

Some would argue there can't be any original ideas...that all storytelling follows certain established routes.

Well of course it does, there's only seven original plot lines for conflict, defeating evil, rags to riches, a quest, voyage (and return), comedy, tragedy, and rebirth. All storytelling is derived from these seven plots. The primary argument for this is that they're all vague enough to encompass every film plot. They all stem back there in some way or another. The originality lies in the way you manipulate the plot between the start and end to make it different enough from other stories that have been told. Just because every story follows the same basic plot doesn't mean it has the exact same plot.
