Why did the father pour acid on his head?

I'm guessing to hide his identity...but the detective seemed to know who he was anyway. Was it to make sure he was hospitalized instead of jailed? Seems like an awfully painful and horrific thing to do.

The acid was to protect from being traced back to Abby, but I agree with you -- it really bugged me when the police officer already had his sketch.

Given that, it would be logical to assume Thomas didn't know they had his sketch. He's not the brightest bulb, but even he would know not to burn his face off if it would do no good.

Well at least they only had a crappy sketch from the boys in the car.

The sketch came from neighbors at the housing complex, to be precise, through follow-up police interviews. And yes, it was a crappy sketch.

This remake carried forth a few elements from the original movie (too many, for some; not enough, for others). This was one of them.

Indeed, it made little sense. Like, fingerprints was old news, and I don't remember him burning his pinkies off. And genetic testing was mere months away - police forces were already freezing tissues, to be ready for it.

There were going to be no secrets.

But, it was a cool, horrific scene, I guess.

One thing, we had a discussion here about blood banking for Abby, and how she and her dad might not know about it. Dousing himself with acid plays into that ignorance of modern technologies.

I still think she should at least "try" a bag 'o' blood to see how it works for her! 😁

"genetic testing was mere months away" is only useful if your DNA on file, sure they might be able to get his DNA but nothing to compare it against.

reply

Interest fact though that they knew the science was coming and were collecting samples for some time before they could use it.

reply

still unless he had been caught and questioned by the police for an earlier offence they still wouldn't have his DNA.

reply

Correct. But what I meant was that they were collecting DNA from crime scenes. From what we saw - and he was supposed to have been well-practiced at the point this movie played out - he wasn't very careful. A plastic garbage bag wasn't exactly an effective "body condom". (Great scene though)

Just FYI, I wrote a fan-fic sequel, and there are others here who did the same, where the follow-up police investigation played a major role.

But in the end, it didn't matter about the "father" character, because he lobbed himself out a window, to terminate that line of leads. And the only character that made a connection to Abby got himself chewed up in the bathroom scene!

He was trying to change his face so as to hide his identity. Not a clever move given there were many other ways to identify him, however he dedicated his life to serving a child vampire. Probably not the brightest guy.

I gave this a 9 and the original an 8.

The better question is WHY would you put a spoiler like that right in the title of your post?!
Is this your first time on the internet??

reply

Why would you go to a discussion board if you haven't already seen the movie?

reply

it is not a spoiled to ask about the first scene of a movie

reply

Yes it is.
If you just read a few more posts below your own you would have seen that Hal-9010 explains it perfectly. So I'll just copy and paste what he said.

The opening scene shows us an unidentified man who is horribly disfigured and guilty of something nasty

Who is he? Why is he disfigured? Was he burned? Was he tortured? What did he do ? Heck, perhaps it was a monster? Guess we have to watch the movie to find out, how exciting....

YES, the OP spoiles the movie a bit with this headline... the OP tells us it is the father, second the OP tells us he disfigured himself and thirdly the OP tells us what caused it and that it happend mysteriously....

reply

Why put a spoiler in as the title? Idiotic.

What are your favorites?

This is not a spoiler -- it is quite literally the opening scene of the movie.

Either way, good conduct should try and avoid spoilers in headlines and secondly mention a spoiler alert in the first line of a post if it has any. Not complicated and better for all

He wasn't her father at all if I remember, was he her lover or brother? Someone please answer

In Let Me In, he was just some poor little skinny bullied kid with ugly glasses that Abby befriended along the way, probably around 1935.
