What Was Steven Doing... (mild spoilers)

...while waiting alone in the car? This is right before he sees his mother's corpse in the hearse. He lays something on the dash - I thought it was a contact lens case - and the movie makes it a point to show us Steven twisting something off a little plastic-looking frame. What the hell was that; and why did we need to see it? I rewatched it a couple times and I'm baffled. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know why he was doing it, but if you look closely it was the wheels to a model car. If you paid attention to his house, you would see that he was into collecting toys and later on in the movie he talked about building models.

Maybe he was doing it as a way to relieve stress.
