I've come to expect a terrible 'story' when the writer and director are the same person.
That's because the writer/director, Robert Hall, is the founder of the Almost Human effects house. He created the make-up for 'Buffy' and 'Angel' and did that fantastic mutant thing at the end of 'Quarantine'. I guess he got tired of having to hold back and finally secured the funding to do his own movie featuring every f-ed up splatter effect he could imagine. I agree, the script isn't all that hot, but the physical effects are incredible.
