Better than I remember

After watching IM3, I went back and watched the first two again, and I find I can now appreciate this one as a stepping stone to the Avengers and IM3. What would someone like Tony Stark do if he was dying? Self-destruct obviously, as he self-destructed in IM3 after the battle of Manhattan. Every IM film is a story of redemption, even Avengers when he learned to lie on the wire.

As a character, I'm appreciating Tony Stark more and more.

Exactly. Maybe it was unreal expectations for a few fans when this originally hit but it always has been a well structured and well written film. Tony Stark's character arc works masterfully over the three films.

I basically had the same experience. I saw it when it first came out, thought it was a bit clunky, and never watched it again until just now. I'm not too proud to admit when I'm wrong, and I was wrong. I think it's a wonderfully entertaining popcorn movie that skillfully builds upon the first film, while also setting up the next phase leading into The Avengers. I think it's actually a better film than the first Iron Man, and leaps and bounds ahead of the 3rd one; though to be fair, I'm going to have to re-watch that one now in light of my change of mind here.

Expectations could have played a part but this was a solid to great film right from the start. Had they delivered more from Whiplash in the finale, it would be a perfect sequel.

I hope you don't consider Ironman 3 canon
