How is Tony Stark still alive?

The whole world knows he is Iron Man. People know where he lives, where he works. If he's the main reason America is safe then that means he's pissed off a lot of criminals, dictators, terrorist organizations, etc. He would be their number one target.

He walks around in public as Tony Stark. Not Iron Man. He attends these huge public events as himself. How easy would it be for a sniper or assassin to take him out? The movie's premise is just not plausible. I remember in the comic books from the '80s and '90s his identity was secret. That seems like the only possible way to go. Otherwise he just makes himself a target.

agreed.

Have you noticed the footage of the iron suits developed all over the world he's managed to take on different locations secretly? Perhaps you underestimate his abilities to monitor the enemies. He's omnipresent and all-knowing almost like the God almighty, perhaps he even owns the global database with data on all the earthlings you and me including.

reply

the OP means that war lords, terrorist and other people could easily kill Tony when he is not on the suit, sniper rifle and that's it.

reply

neither terrorists nor warlords can kill Tony if he's planned his unprotected appearance in advance by bending their rifles and putting other crimps in their schemes

reply

Wow I didn't know Tony could bend rifles with his mind. He must really be badass. Seriously though, when Tony was in Monaco for the racing he was in a public restaurant. Someone could easily poison his food or drink. Someone could walk up and stab him from behind. When he decided to drive the racecar himself and was outside someone could have sniped him or planted a bomb in his racecar. Or you could just have a badass with laser whips approach him while he's driving and kick his ass. The possibilities are endless.

I like the Iron Man movies but you really have to suspend your disbelief when it comes to this particular issue.

A sniper could take out most superheroes in any public appeaence they have, secret identity or not. Yet this doesn't happen. Likewise a super villain mass murderer like, say, the Joker, especially given how many times he's escaped, would be put in some hole deep and dark enough he'd never get out, and if he did they'd just shoot him on sight.

It's like comic book physics, logic falls by the wayside. You can only apply so much to any situation in the comic verse before things falls apart.

reply

This is true and a good point. But talking about Stark specifically, if his identity was secret and he only appeared in public as Iron Man he wouldn't have to worry about snipers.

reply

The original poster makes a great point. That's the MAIN reason why most superheroes don't reveal their identities.

It's hard to believe no one has tried to kill him in his sleep etc.

reply

Well isnt iron man 2 set 6 months after IM1? I cant remember, but if u look at it that way then its took a few months for an assassination attempt, even though it was more a personal vendetta for Ivan...

reply

He is still alive the same way presidents of the modern age are still alive in america. Tony has better tech and security then a U.S president.

reply

It's very different. Superhero movies have characters that are gods, magic, can become invisible, have superstrength, can absorb energy, resurrect themselves etc.

In the real world it's more risky to try to kill the President because humans have limits and can easily be killed by the smallest of things. It would be very dangerous to try to get close enough to take out someone like the President. In the comic book world, it's not as intimidating for characters with such impressive powers and abilities.

reply

I don't know... perhaps it is because it is just a movie? Just sayin'. Don't read too much into it, jeeze!

The comic explanation was hardly better. In the comics, the cover story was that Iron Man was Tony Stark's personal bodyguard. Obviously the tech was created by Stark himself, and any enemy of Iron Man's would by nature be an enemy of Tony Stark's. The only "benefit" of keeping a secret identity was that Tony could dodge responsibilty by "firing" Iron Man when he did something stupid.

This Tony Stark is not allowed to dodge responsibility by firing himself. He says "I am Iron Man" and that directly states that Iron Man's mistakes are Tony Stark's mistakes. As far as people targeting him or people he cares about-- he's Iron Man. His technology is so many times more advanced than 99.9% of what anyone else is doing. His armors/AI protect him in his sleep.

And think: who are the people that'll be targeted? Pepper? Tony wouldn't spare any expense to keep her safe. Rhodey? That guy is a decorated soldier, even without his War Machine armor. Pre-Avengers, Tony Stark mostly dealt with terrorism, which would not likely come to his front door. Iron Man 3 showed what happened when it did come to his front door. He still dealt with it.
