Oh, it's definitely ridiculous. I would have preferred off-camera references to what actually ended up happening. I love how Harry didn't even show up for Dixon at the hospital. Debbie didn't even seem upset. I don't think Lori was even invested.
I do think that is why the other parents were (mostly) vilified or killed off. If they ever wanted Naomi, Liam, Silver, Teddy, or Adrianna to get into an accident, it would have been at least somewhat believable for their parents to not show up. Naomi's parents didn't even seem to love or care about her since Episode 1. Liam's parents were terrible from their introduction. Although his mother was slightly less horrible. Silver's father isn't horrible from the original show, but then Silver never got into a bad enough accident I think where Mel would have needed to appear. Jackie appeared and was killed off. Kelly wasn't vilified but her absence made no sense either and was because Jennie didn't want to be a part of it anymore. Teddy's mom is dead, his father is a movie star who treats him like crap from his introduction. Adrianna's mother is terrible, but I do think the actress isn't famous enough to really risk losing her, which I think is also true of the actors who play Navid's parents and Ivy's mom. That said, it's always a risk to have likable parents on a teen show, especially if the actors playing them have access to other opportunities and don't feel satisfied with the current work.
The O.C. combatted this problem by having Sandy, Kirsten, Jimmy and Julie just as important as the teen characters. Although, Tate Donovan spoke candidly about that and said he didn't like the shows direction in season 2, which contributed to why he left.
