What's up with the girls in this show? Especially Carly!

Is it just me, or are the girls in this usually a bit boring/stuck up/take themselves too seriously? Well, Charlotte had a bit more humour, I think I'm mainly thinking of Carly, she never seems to see the funny side of anything! And Tara was a bit of a moany cow, let alone her weird bitchy sister. I suppose girls in this sort of thing are always portrayed as representing the social norm to represent the main characters' fear of/unfamiliarity with females and the wider world. But girls can also be awkwardm, funny, have quirks and self esteem issues, they're not all cold, smooth, confident and "sophisticated". And I know Carly is supposed to be much more "sophisticated" and popular than Simon, but I think it's actually quite immature the way she dicks him about and is so concerned about her social status and perceived superiority.
The only really accepting one was Kerry, and look how she got treated.
And to say more about Carly, what do people think is the situation with Carly? Does she like Simon, but only as a friend? Does she like him but doesn't want to compromise her social status by being with him? Does she just use him to make her boyfriend jealous or because she is insecure and craves male attention? Is she just too shy to definitively reject him and so it seems like she's leading him on, or did she once like Simon, but lost it somewhere along the ride of projectile vomit, tramp shoes and hairy testicles...

I've noticed this and it has bugged me, not all girls are like carly, Tara or Charlotte, but I get the feeling it is all about writting. Maybe to show how Simon, will and co. handle girls like this or just to put them in these situations. It would be nice to have a non-moaning, funny and quirky girl on the show but I really do not think that will happen....the writters seem to think all girls are bitches....probably from their own experience with them.

The girls are in charge. They are calling all the shots. This is to highlight the boy's gaucheness in comparison to the girl's social ease, and the fact that the good looking girls they fancy can easily crush them. The girls can be as haughty as they wish, the lads will still fancy them. None of this applies to girls they don't fancy, like Kerry. You know, the writing is from the lad's point of view, so Simon has no idea where he stands with Carly, that's the point.

reply

Yeah, the girls are pretty annoying. They make the guys (minus Jay) likeable by comparision. If Simon goes back to crying over Carli, I'll lose what little respect I originally had for him.

This is why this show is so good .. it shows how these inbetweeners want the hot girls, but the hot girls can treat them however they like. This is where the humour is. Most guys watching will know what this is like, that's why it is funny.

Yeah I think the girls aren't written from a girls point of view. I'm sure if this was an hour long program about teenage life in general we'd probably see more depth to the girls, and see what was going on behind their behaviour so we could relate to them and what not. But as it is, it's about the boys and their social ineptitude, so to them the girls are a bit out of reach and if they don't want to have the boys wanking over them it's because they're stuck up snotty cows, and not because generally speaking the boys are disgusting lecherous pervs, in the nicest possible way of course.

I am confused about where Carli stands with Simon. In the episode where he spray painted her driveway, she was nice to him, she saw the other boys pissing them selves at his stupidity and invited him round to shut them up. But then that might have just been because she's known him for years and likes him as a friend? Plus his vomiting on her brother after demanding that she finger herself while he watched probably killed any potential romance there.

OMG, this line had me laughing out loud :-)

I don't know if I'm the only one but I really hate Carli as a character. Emily Head is a fantastic actress and she turns Carli into a character you have strong feelings for one way or another. Carli, to me, is a total bitch because of the way she has wrapped Simon around her little finger, building him up only to brutally knock him down. She's done this more than once. She doesn't (IMO) love Simon at all, but enjoys the attention he gives while he despairs.

Just a theory of mine but in the last episode of Series 2, I don't think she'd broken up with the rugby player at all; she just wanted to play with Simon a bit. She knew that he'd hate her if she told him they'd never separated so she cooked up a lie about getting back together.

I agree about Carly.
No one in my school/college that is female is like her... she just seemed so boring and she just didn't seem to have a sense of humour.
Just things like..

Simon- "Oh your actually here, you weren't lying about coming then?"
Carly- "No, why would I be lying?"

Her response to the "having the painters in".. and in Will's Birthday "Think I might piss my pants", and her reaction. She just didn't seem to see the side of sarcasm or humour at all, she was very wooden.

reply

The joke is that Simon fancies her but she doesn't see him that way at all, just as someone who's a friend of the family.

Her attitude when is being nice to him is really patronising.

reply

I thought Lauren was lovely, and Charlotte was a cool chick. Carly was meant to be a horrible bitch who would be the female equivalent of "she's just not that into you". That was the point.

reply

Charlotte was funnier, but she was still pretty horrible- the way she treated Will wasn't too nice.

reply

And similarly, the way Will treated Charlotte wasn't too nice either. I'd consider Will making up lies about her as more horrible behaviour than anything she ever did to him.

reply

That was in a later episode? But yes, I agree. The guys are mostly horrible.

reply

I do think that all the girls in the show are snotty and sophisticated. While this isn't an accurate portrayal of teenage girls- realistically they have their own insecurities and quirks etc- I think the writers did this on purpose. They are showing us how teenage boys often tend to perceive girls- as unattainable, perfect, ice-queen types, which thus only adds to the boys' feelings of awkwardness and inadequacy.

reply

Carli is a b tch but the four main characters were at least as bad but people overlook that cause they're funny.

reply

I don't think Carli is a bitch really.

She's manipulative and uses people (well Simon) but; she's not really mean and she stuck up for Will in the movie when Donovan was giving him a wedgie so I don't think she's really a horrible person.
