Question about the first episode (Guinness?)

Hello everyone,

I was rewatching the show and I watched a scene where something happened that I never truly understood:

When they are at the "Black Bull", they all want to order a pint of lager, yet Will wants a pint of Guinness instead.

They all looked at him with a shocked/confused face as if saying "Guinness? Really?"

Now, I'm not British, but why did they react that way? I've tried Guinness a couple of times, it's not bad. Why were they surprised?

reply

i think the point is cos they're school kids and most young un's don't really go for guiness

'it never occurred to me that skin could determine identity'

reply

For young lads (maybe who have just started drinking) in the UK it's more common to drink lager than Guinness. Guinness is a bit "heavy" and more of an acquired taste.

The above is the correct answer. Disregard everything else.

I am American and whenever I watch British comedy I have to accept that some of the humor is going to be lost on me because of the culture difference. The scene you are talking about here, I interpreted it like if a teen in the US were to order "a martini, shaken--not stirred!" or maybe an "old fashioned" or "scotch on the rocks" ....something that sounds cool and grown up... cliched... not what a typical teen would actually like or want.

Being from the UK, I don't think Guinness sounds any more sophisticated than any other beer.

I always thought was that they were trying to look cool in ordering alcohol. So were all ordering the same thing as that's what they thought was cool, so they were surprised when Neil went against the flow.

Also, Guinness is a lot stronger taste, so is more likely to be enjoyed by an experienced drinker who is more used to the taste.

I think it was to show how pretentious Will is lol

I think because he wasn't going along withthe gang, however, I remember going into pubs as a 16/17 year old with a mate, and me and him would always order Guinness or a pint of heavy, became regulars at the weekend and never got id'd. I also just rewatched the first episode and what happened to will in the toilet happened to me, thank god there were no camera phones then lol
