Do we miss the horrifying, real idea of this film? SPOILERS

With so much hype about the real / not real thing (which I see only as a script trick to make the film more original), I think people miss what I think is the true idea of this movie: that the Christian God, Jesus Himself, is a monster, an evil alien. I find the idea very brilliant and very disturbing.
So, did people miss this, or are they just too frightened to speak about it? Or am I wrong?

Gognitti bailed. I made like Chow Yun-Fat.

I'm reminded of one of the closing lines in a similarly themed movie: The Wicksboro Incident. "The threat of alien takeover is very real. But maybe we shouldn't think about it. It's too scary to think about." It went something like that. I may have butchered it severely.

In any case this movie is not the first to bring up this idea of God being an alien. It's been a popular concept ever since a book titled Chariot of the Gods put it forward all the way back in 1968. History Channel even has a show that explores this possibility, called Ancient Aliens. I could definitely see a lot of more frightening potential coming out of this idea, though, you're right.

For me the scariest thing about the film was just the abduction scenario/sleep paralysis type of content. The feeling that someone is watching over you, someone's at the door of your bedroom, you're staying awake all night scared stiff in your bed because there's someone watching you... I think that's some very creepy content that they could have more fully exploited in this movie.

I have to disagree - the movie was definitely saying that God is an alien - or, more specifically, that what humans think of as God is actually an alien. Abigail even says something to the effect of "It can not be be God, but it can pretend to be" in one of the last interview segments.

well, no. it was definitely saying that what ancient sumerians thought of (key words: THOUGHT OF) as god was actually an alien. there was never any connection made between that and any "modern" religions and there were never any implications that these aliens created humans either for that matter.

any connections you guys are making between the aliens described in this movie and things like christianity or the creation of mankind in whatever form it took are entirely imagined on your end. there was not one single thing in this movie that suggested that "jesus was an evil alien".

that's like coming to the conclusion that "well ancient greeks thought that zeus was god and creator of us all, but now we have discovered that they were really just worshiping the then unknown concept of thunder and lightning, therefore thunder and lightning must have created us all and also jesus was secretly made of thunder and lightning too!" see the problem there?

You need to rethink your analogy here; it stands to reason that if one culture's god can turn out to be extraterrestrial, other culture's gods might be too. Many religions share "observed" phenomena. As to whether the filmmakers explicitly meant to comment on Judeo-Christian mythology, I don't know.

The concept of monstrous beings being somehow our "ancestors" or "forgotten deities" has been explored as far back as in the writings of H.P. Lovecraft.

If you want to see a film that explores a similar theme (that of god being a sort of extraterrestrial/hostile entity) & that does it way better than THE FOURTH KIND, watch Larry Cohen's GOD TOLD ME TO.

I enjoyed the setting & atmosphere of FOURTH KIND, though. But it was DuMb.

In the Sumerian language there were many different types of gods, and many different words to describe those gods. The Sumerians didn't believe in one supreme God as Christians and Jews do, therefore they had no word for a concept they never even considered.

Good point, RARanieri, though it doesn't alter the idea of the supreme good being the supreme evil (it doesn't matter whether it's a unique God or more gods). Or is it? :)

The idea of the duality of good and evil is nothing new, that concept has been around for thousands of years. However, there is certainly a huge difference between a supreme God and a group of lesser gods. Just like there is little to compare between the President of the United States and the president of your local city council.

...more like mass hysteria, hallucinations & BS are real. I would've rather seen more of the aurora borealis than that annoying pretending-to-be-real "footage" of that woman going "aahhhh! arrrgh! ahhh!"

wow you people on here are just dumb as *beep* ever heard of the word sheep referencing to people, cause thats what you fu.cktards are, the point of the movie is to show you what u think of aliens are in reality demons, pretending to be god, and yeah that concept of jesus christ being an alien, has been explored and done so many times, and there is some truth to it

people al over the world have changed their praise in churches for jesus christ when in reality christians should not be worshipping anyone but god, not the virgin mary not the saints not jesus christ

this opinion i just gave u is taken from people involved in this stuff, research more about satanism and satanists testimonies u will understand like they have that jesus christ is a demon, if ur son was killed on a cross would u like people to be wearing crosses to keep referencing to how they killed him?? Catholicism has a funny way to show they like god

i think that what happened at the end of the movie is that they pissed off some crazy demon or maybe satan himself

the only reason why this sort of thing happens to people is because you dont have god in your life, im not a christian myself but i do understand what is going on and how changed reality has become, for gods sake we got a church of satan in america i dont know how more blatant u can be about it

so yeah the aliens or entities watever u want to call it are the ones doing this things to this people, and theyre are ways of fighting this things through exorcisms or commanding demons through the word of god

the problem is god doesnt waste his time on sinners, so no wonder no one has contact after all, friend arent u a sinner?

i oughtta b.i.t.c.h slap you right about now

Tells people they are dumb, then proceeds to write one of the dumbest posts in one of the poorest ways I have ever seen.

Clearly, you shouldn't have dropped out of school.

Now if you believe in God, why do you use insults?
Certainly Jesus taught that insult is sin.

If your study the Bible attentively, both Old and New Testament - you will see that God and Jesus Christ are one and the same God, it's just Jesus is God's manifestation in flesh.
Jesus claimed He was before Moses, and said "I am", which is God's name,
accepted Thomas' worship and "My Lord and my God" addressing.
Forgave sins, while people claimed that only God can do so, etc.
Also in Isaiah prophecy, God tells that His servant (Jesus Christ) is He himself.

That's why you reject Christ as Lord and God, you're not christian.
How you're supposed to be saved and enter God's Kingdom of Heaven then?

By God's grace, i do believe in God and Lord Jesus Christ.

Some unrepentant sinners would surely like your words very much - there are lots of such people hating and insulting God and Jesus, while claiming they don't exist.

Anyway, the movie character, Tyler claimed that the thing that possessed her had despair in it and could not have been God.

I believe UFO/aliens are really fallen angels and evil spirits.
There's a verse in the Bible where Jesus saw satan falling down like lightning from heaven.
Satan also desires worship as a god, it is seen when he tempted Jesus by power over the world to make him bow down and worship him.

Also the spoken words were Sumerian, whose civilization was pagan, and not believing in a single God, as ancient Israel did.
It would have been unproductive for God and Jesus to bring two contradicting religions - in one place to bring people to sin and idol worship, but in another place to call them to righteousness and worship of the only one invisible God the Father.
In fact Babel, which was around the same region, had people building a sky-tower in a revolt against God.
Eventually Sumer was included into the Babylonian empire.
I can tie this with some interpretations of the Book of Revelation, where USA is the Mystery Babylon, which will be destroyed by God's will.

Of course, the disappearance of Tyler's daughter could be interpreted as the Rapture event, but Bible tells it would only happen on Jesus' second coming, when He will be visible to the world, as lightning across the sky.

So you could believe it was pointing at Jesus as alien.
But from my christian point of view, i suppose the movie describes that many people of USA are brainwashed by the evil spirit (hypnosis), the ruler of this world, satan - through whose influence, USA became a new wicked Babylon, and will be destroyed. God in the Bible often describes countries as women, so Tyler could be a symbol of USA, while her daughter is the symbol of the future of USA, she disappears - so there is no future for USA.
Also it could be also a warning of hypnosis, which is considered to be occult- like practice and thus sin against God.

Check the prophecies on USA, if that is really her, then it's kinda scary, but there will definitely be a warning from God across it, as referenced in Books Jeremiah 51:6 and Revelation 18:4, so that those who believe in Lord Jesus Christ will be saved.
