Opening monologue ruins the whole movie

Having Milla Jovovich talk out of character to the audience just reminds us all that this is a movie. It becomes really hard to suspend disbelief after that - you just keep thinking back to the monologue and remembering that she's just acting. Bad idea.

I've seen things that would make you want to write a book on how to puke.

I hate to break this to you kid, but after about 10 years old it is essentially impossible to "suspend disbelief" and not have your "immersion broken" when watching any movie under any condition. When you get older you will see. But anyways, I agree that the part was lame and the movie should not have tried to play itself off as real, since the only real thing about the movie is that a disproportionate number of people go missing in Nome (but they are almost always found, and it is never aliens).

Oh really? How old are you? At what age will suspension of disbelief stop working?

Everyone who watches a movie knows it's just a movie, but you willingly stop thinking about it in those terms to enjoy it. Her monologue makes that much more difficult.

Well that was incredibly condescending..

I think the opening monologue was a very clever trick. It created an illusion that parts of the movie (the parts without professional actors) might actually be real documentary footage. Some people fell for it, as you can see in this board.

It certainly was a clever trick, and I hope most people can see that now.
