Noomi Rapace would have made a much better Major
Scarlett Johansson really was miscast in this, and it had nothing to do with race.
Part of the problem is that she was supposed to be stoic, not emotionless. There's a difference between the two, and even in the animated film from back in the 90s the voice actress managed to capture the range of Major's personality while still being stoic, something Johansson struggled with, making her performance come across as more stilted than it should have been.
It became more obvious whenever she shared scenes with more accomplished actors like Juliette Binoche, who acted absolute circles around Johansson.
I think Noomi has shown a lot more range when having to portray stoic characters who are still emotional, sort of like in What Happened To Monday, and when she played Lisbeth Salander.
Johansson's range seemed to range between stone-faced or slightly annoyed.
When she was supposed to be menacing she came across as aloof, and when she was supposed to be inquisitive she came across as disinterested, and when she was supposed to be intense she came across as nonchalant.
It's interesting but Johansson's lack of acting abilities really showcased how difficult it was to actually properly capture the nuances of a character like the Major.
It reminded me of John Wick... a guy who's stoic and intense, doesn't show a lot of emotion, but requires an actor who can act with very subtle nuances. Keanu Reeves may not be very rangy actor, but he was perfect for John Wick.
Noomi Rapace, however, is a very rangy actress, and she would have been perfect for this movie. I think Charlize Theron might have been able to pull off this role as well, given that she played a similar character in the Fast & Furious, and despite the movies being awful, Charlize managed to portray a character with various traits under a seemingly impassive exterior.
