There have been threads on this in the past - bottom line, they gave him a pass when he ID'ed himself as the person who called them.
In the novel, he actually took the time to hide the stash elsewhere in the building, which is a bit more plausible. It also means the screenwriter/director purposely chose to omit that scene because they felt ID'ing himself would be enough.
