My favorite princess but what does the movie mean?

Despite all the apparent hate over this movie, I like Merida. she is the first Disney princess to not have a love interest and the movie focuses on something other than a romantic relationship.

Now there was a topic I saw up here some time ago asking about the title of the movie. They wanted to know exactly which character was "brave." I'm more confused as to what the point was with the whole fate thing and why the main quote of this movie is "our fate lies within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it."

No one's fate was revealed. It is basically Merida not wanting to get married and her mom sees things from her POV just before Merida decides to follow the tradition. So it kind of comes off as Merida, in the end, getting her own way.

To be honest, I don't think the movie makes sense with things like that but the character they created, I personally like. But that's just me.

There was a lot of messing around with the script towards the end of production and the plot suffered a bit, BUT......

The key to figure out what is actually going on is found in the Witch`s rhyme and figuring out precisely who`s fate is being referred to.

"Fate be changed, look inside.
Mend the bond torn by pride."

The thing is, there are at least four possible broken bonds in the story but the biggest one is the one Merida didn`t have a hand in breaking since it was broken before she was even born. Mor`Du`s bond.

It also worth asking the question what the Wisps agenda is as the script makes a specific point of telling us that "They lead you to your fate" and who is being lead where is a key point.
I.E the Wisps lead Merida somewhere, then Mor`Du shows up just afterwards.

Seeing the movie as it was released, I saw two bonds torn by pride: Merida's relationship with her mom as well as the Mom's relationship with her daughter. Both were stubborn, but neither was 100% wrong. There was a gray area. To fix this, both had to put their pride aside and meet halfway. Regards

Another is Merida`s bond with the kingdom as she is a royal princess and oldest child of the king and is of an age where she is almost an adult.
As a girl she would probably have trouble inheriting the throne in her own right (though by the end of the film she`s proved to the three major clan lords that she could make a good leader) but under the rules of inheritance that apply in the time and place the story is set her prospective husband would have equal status with her three brothers in making a claim (that`s why the marriage is so important, this kingdom needs a strong heir to the throne).

The Mor`Du one where he tried to seize the throne for himself when his father wanted all the brothers to rule equally using the spell to turn into a bear and probably kill his three brothers (note that Merida also has three brothers, apparently borne AFTER the events at the films opening, seems like fate was trying to rerun the same story over again).
