Yep. They just don't make for very interesting movies.
As my 11th grade English teacher said, insane characters as the basis for a story, is a lazy, week devise. They are capable of doing anything and no explanation, no rationality is required because, well, they're insane. Yawn.

I think he means the son, who by the way is not "insane" but mentally challenged. Mental illness and insanity are not always the same thing. Also, the movie is not so much about the murder itself, but the implications and consequences of this murder, and the relation between the mother and son.
