Which is more trustworthy: Subs or body language?

I have a tendency to incorporate ~80% of what a subtitle is telling me, leaving the rest (and occasionally the entire scene) to what appears to be universal body language. Does anyone else get this effect? Not to mention the acoustic tone of the speech itself, which more than makes up for having to read text during the entire film.

Absolutely - I glance at the subtitles to get a gist of what's being said, but the actors' body language, inflection, and facial expressions are far more important - at least in a good film like this. This is NOT an arguement for dubbing which destroys almost every film it's used for.

reply

Oh don't even get me started on dubbing- an absolute sacrilege in my opinion.
Yeah the thought came to me very clearly during this film, a testament to the powerful acting perhaps.

On my copy of the dvd one or twice the subtitles flashed, but by seeing their movements and knowing what they were talking about I could guess what I missed easily.
