The Poison (spoilers)

I was confused about the attempted murder-suicide by poison.

Was Do-joon always mentally disabled, or did the poison cause brain damage that left him the way he was?

And what were her real motives for the poisoning? Other than just being crazy, of course. Why was she so desperate?

Contemplate this on The Tree of Woe.

I'm not really sure if he was mentally handicapped before or after the poisoning, but the reason why the mother tried to kill both herself and her son was because she was a struggling single mother and they were so poor that, she thought it best to just end their lives... though I'm still trying to work out where she got that huge wad of cash.

families in deep poverty committing suicide together in korea isn't all that rare...

i think vengeance for mr. vengeance touched upon that briefly too.

The movie takes place over four years. She has a herb shop and does acupuncture on the side. She takes a loan from her photo lab friend to pay for the broken mirror, and then saves up enough money to pay Jae-te what he think she owes him and for him to interrogate the two boys.

Well not four months but I based this on the son being released.

But you must admit some time went by, it's not a stretch for her to get that money, since she borrowed it from the photo lab lady and runs a herb shop.

The son was released because they "found the real killer".

The "4 year plea bargain" was something the lawyer suggested at the karaoke bar, but the mother turned down.
