Comic elements

How did people take to the first 45-60 minutes of the film, for me the film played out like a Cohen brothers comedy where we observe a bunch of ostensibly quite ludicrous and stupid characters. I am not sure if I was supposed to find some out amusing or not but I did. I sort of enjoyed the bad influence of Jin Tae and was disappointed Gong the attorney wasn't more involved as thing progressed.

Obviously as the film goes on it becomes more dark and insightful but just interested if anyone felt the same as me.

Yeah it definitely had some comic undertones especially with the character of the son's friend (it's been months since I watched the movie so his name escapes me). They weren't like LOL moments but they had me smiling. Oh and a standout scene for me where I got a lot of amusement was when the aforementioned friend (or whatever he was to Won Bin's character) comes home and the mother is hiding in the closet while him and the chick fvck around.

It seems a lot of the director's movies are like this. I've seen four now and all of them have some comedy weaved into an overall deep and serious movie, and like you said the endings especially being the darkest bit.

In watching Korean film and dramas (literal dramas, excluding the rom-coms that are included in the "K-Drama" genre), I find Korean filmmakers realize life has its funny moments. Just because you're making a serious movie doesn't mean the characters can't have a light moment.

I'm glad to see someone else noticed this. I laughed a lot. From the very opening of the movie I sensed the off-beat humor
