"- The mother looked as retarded as the son."
All her life revolves around her son, and she panics several times when that is threatened to be destroyed completely. She is supposed to be an extreme "mother", you know. Also with some psychological issues and not terribly educated, to make the character work and not distract from the themes. However, of normal intelligence for her background and relative to other characters.
"- The "best friend" character acted like the killer during the whole movie. He invades the Mother's house, treats her like *beep* and blackmail her... Then, later, helps her like some sort of badass. Totally unbelievable character."
He is a shady character alright, but indiciated to be relatively smart (aside from his methods and good investigative reasoning, he had a science book lying around). His shadiness is partly what seems to enable him to find trails. And "badassness" implies some sort of going out of the norm, even violence, though in a sympathetic association or application.
And a murder investigation movie with ambiguities, false trails and shady characters, who would have thought such a thing.
"- The incest conotation was really needed? It was gross and never amounted to anything."
It displayed his simplemindedness regarding sexuality and the close relationship and dependency between them. He's a "mother's boy" of the most extreme sort, and his mother is partly at fault, and the connotation was just to show how "odd" it is - in a way society would talk about it as well.
These are random crap points you have, making it seem as if you watched it on a phone, or certainly established as much of a connection with what you were viewing. I'd say it's certainly an interesting film.
