They could have taken over the entire ship
No need for the outside contact through the doctor, they could have just taken the guns from the guards and beat all of them on the ship and then take the ship to the coast by themselves, considering how many prisoners there were, it was manageable. Sometimes it seemed too elaborate for its own good, almost too much to take that seriously.
