I thought he did good speaking english as well but yeah I'd love to see a movie where he spoke only German cause he showed a more dramatic side doing that

Well, no. During shooting he spoke English (with his unmistakeable heavy Austrian accent). He obviously can't speak German on set, when all others speak English ... they would not understand him. It would get in the way of their acting.

So he would have to lend his dubbing voice after the shooting. But he didn't do it, apparently. I saw the German version and that's NOT his voice you hear there. Arnold was dubbed by someone.

Actually, does anyone of you know, where to find the list of voice actors for any given movie ? Is that listed here on IMDB somewhere (or else anywhere else) ?

No, it wasn't dubbed. At least not in the original English version of the movie:

Most of the time, Arnie speaks English in this movie, but there is a short scene in which he speaks and swears in German. And that is Arnold doing the lines in German. It is his original voice.

As for the German version of the movie: Of course it is dubbed. But since the same voice actor is doing the German voice for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Silvester Stallone, they had to use a different person to do the German voice of Arnie.

I don't understand how he could live in the US for so long and still have such a thick accent. My friend's grandfather came to the US as a young man and didn't speak a word of English when he first got here. He became fluent and still had an accent but not nearly as bad as Arnie. I have met other people who learned English as adults who don't sound as over the top as Arnie.

And I agree that it is hilarious that he became the Governor of California.

Maybe because he has this real thick accent in German as well - born and raised in Austria. Although he could dial it down quite a bit in this film you still can hear easily where he originally is from.

Because most of people aren't able to lose their Non-native accent. There are many studies done on the subject, there appears to be ciritcal period in childs development to learn native accent. It warries a lot, but if child moved into another country even as young as 6 is likely to speak audible accent in adulthood. For those who moved to another country as a young adult, losing accent is next to impossible.

I think Germans might disagree.

It may be an 'urban myth' thing, but I saw a TV show once where they said Arnie had offered or wanted to do the German dub for the Terminator and they said no, because his Austrian German accent makes him sound like a farmer.

I'm guessing it must be something like (as an Englishman) the way the accent of Emily Proctor - Calleigh Duquesne in CSI Miami - really gets on my nerves.

Proves my point. He doesn't speak High German (standard German) but with a heavy Austrian accent. Imagine the Terminator speaking like that. Hilarious.

how do actors from other countries like UK or Australia manage to speak in american accents then?

I always wondered that, People like Arnold or Sofia Vergara cant get rid of their accent, but then other actors can definitely get rid of it, How are those other actors capable of doing this?

Like Saniainen said, it is a totally different thing to change your British accent into American or Australian in a film than move to a totally new language and master some region's version of it. Many British actors, like Tom Wilkinson, manage to put the American accent spot on, but it is not fair to expect, let's say Javier Bardem or Antonio Banderas, speak in perfect Texan accent, since English is not their first language.

In terms of good fake accents by non-English natives, I think Louis Jourdan (French) pulled off the American accent quite well in this clip:

Peter Lorre spoke better English within a year of learning it than Arnold ever will. When Hitchcock wanted and got him to be in The Man Who Knew Too Much, he didn't speak a word of English.

I think Arnold looks cool when speaking German. I don't really care how Americanized, or countrified people say it sounds like, cuz i can't tell the difference. It's a treat, plus he really looked like he was reaching a new level of acting.

Came here to say the same thing. Maybe I've been wrong all these years and Arnie is actually a pretty good actor, he just needs to speak German while doing it.

I have a brain and good taste, so no, I'm not part of the target demographic.
