Why does old Tonto end up wearing john reid suit by end of movie?

What were the writers trying to say as old Tonto was narrating his story he ended up wearing john reid suit at the end?

Also the meaning of him walking in the desert in the post credits scene?

Ive read some interpretations, would be great to hear other people's ideas.

Many thanks

Our Blockbuster is closing for good on Sunday. Bought a bunch of movies on closeout. The Lone Ranger was one of them. Now, I'm 50yrs old and had my own Lone Ranger flop with KLinton Spilbury (or whatever his name was). However, I grew up watching the TV reruns of the old show with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels.
I didn't expect to like this movie cause of all the horrible reviews when it came out. For the most part, they were right. The movie did have some issues not really knowing what it wanted to do or what it wanted to be.
The idea that the movie is a comedy is quickly squashed as we see people dying quite liberally. One moment to two ate going for laughs and the next moment Indians are being slaughtered. Kinda hard to get into a movie when u keep getting jarred liked that.
However, the film DID work for me largely due to Tonto's dry observations. People say Depp was just playing Capt. Jack Sparrow in the wild west. Maybe he was. All I know is that it was a good buddy film carried mostly by Depp.
Hey, the critics were right on several points BUT this still turned out to be a great $3 movie to enjoy on pay day while on sick leave for several months.
Do t be so serious. Hope u get to enjoy it too.

I don't know if that was supposed to be Reid's suit.

But its my opinion that poor old Tonto is senile. Reid is probably dead of old age at this point and Tonto has lived on to tell the story. Now that it has been passed on, he's gone off to the desert again, maybe to die himself.

Sad and maybe a stretch, but thats what I think.
