Who eats peanuts whole with the shells on?

In the opening scene with old Tonto and the boy, they both eat whole peanuts out of the bag without opening them. Tonto breaks one over his head near the crow hat that shows they're shelled peanuts. Do people eat them like that? Weird.

reply

Yes , they make deep fried peanuts and yes you can eat the shells

reply

Yeah they're actually pretty good with the shells on still. They're a lot saltier because of that which is good.

I've had to cut down on salt for my blood pressure for a long time now. I used to love salt as a child, but now I am so used to low salt food that one time when I ate highly salted french fries from a fast food place the salt seemed to burn my mouth.

So I can't agree that "a lot saltier" is good.

Elephants.

Yes elephants just eat peanuts in the shell.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show episode "Chuckles Bits the Dust" October 25, 1975, had a minor character in the show, Chuckles the Clown, become the grand marshal in a parade in a "Peter Peanut" costume and be fatally injured by being "shelled" by an elephant.

And of course the humor in the classic episode is not lessened by facts like elephants eat peanuts in the shell, or that they have very good senses of smell and could smell that a human in a peanut costume smells different from any food they ever ate.

reply

Yep. That's how I've been eating them for 30 years now.

reply

Yes, there's a little market across the street from my job that sells whole deep-fried peanuts. And they are pretty good.

Don't knock it 'til you've tried it.
