Some movies make you cry, some make you think, some movies make your heart race, & some are pure entertainment. The Lone Ranger is pure entertainment. I laughed a lot, & enjoyed myself! What more could I ask for?
Remember the scene where Tonto, upon seeing Johnny and his sis-in-law (old time sweetheart) jogging the memory lane in a good manner (i.e., no black thought, no bad plan), shook his head and rolled his eyes?
Of course! I see you must think like I do. I like funny, not stupid. I.e. Dumb & Dumber. That's stupid, not funny. I could give you a whole host of stupid.
I agree,I tend to ignore the critics before watching a movie.then it's been my own fault if it's a pile of dung.In this case I found The Lone Ranger to be an entertaining watch.quite clearly with a horse up a tree and cannibal villians it's not to be taken to serious
I do exactly the same thing. Ignore reviews. The critics don't know what I like or am entertained by. Sometimes they are right, but often they aren't for me.
Some years back I realised movies are made to entertain, not be nitpicked on every single detail, so one can sound like one is above the masses. If you like that kind of films, go see films by Refn or Von Trier. Not every movie is made to make you reevaluate your entire existence.
If you go see a movie by Verbinski who gave you Pirates and Rango and you are expecting a movie that is true to what ever reality its based on, you are truly not picking the right line of movies.
I'm glad to read there are still people out there, who watch a movie to be entertained. I myself started to ask myself in the end: "Are you not entertained?"... See what I did there? Anyway, its a simple question.. Yes or no will do. My answer to this movie was yes! Scenery is beautiful, music is absolutely amazing and I believed all the performances.
That said, once the environment has been set, characters should ofc react in a way that makes sense in said environment. Not necessarily in every single aspect to the reality which the film is based on. It's like someone said, with horses up in trees, what did you expect? :)
Well said and I agree. Despite the low ratings I very much enjoyed this film. It was a tad long. I appreciated the busyness of the film...a lot of stuff going on. In kind of reminded me of another favorite action adventure, Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers.Depp was brilliant in this and Hammer was a steady straight man.
I am so glad there are people out there, like me, who ignore reviews. It is up to us to decide what we enjoy. I have hated the 5 star movies & enjoyed the 3 star movies. Personally I think there are VERY few 5 ? movies. Maybe you all could tell me what you think makes a movie 5 ??
I have a rather simple system on how I rate movies - whether or not I were entertained.
However; To understand my rating system, I need to explain a few things first.
To me a movie has to make an impact in your mind, one way or another; it has to leave you with something. This could be something simple like a joke or a humorous situation or things like internal struggles, obstacles in life, trauma, etc.
But of course, none of all this matters if you personally didn't connect to the movie. This could have been a character, the music, the story, the scenery etc. No connection: Two stars or less.
So; the more I think about a movie, the more my strain of thoughts are affected, the more I can't let it go, the higher number of times I find myself staring out the window thinking about a particular scene, the higher number of times I find myself giggling over some scene, the higher the rating.
If I find myself doing any one of the above mentioned the next day, its above two or three stars for sure. Still thinking or analysing it a week later? Then I dare say the instructor has changed you as a person and you look at the world differently; not a feat to be taken lightly and the movie deserves four or five stars.
So, how about movies such as The Room or most of Uwe Boll game-based-movies? We are still thinking about them weeks after seeing them. Surely accordingly to my system that makes them four or five star movies. well; I say every rule has exceptions. No system is perfect. However; ask yourself this: Did you connect to the movie?
Mate, I'm up there with you. I always rate movies based on entertainment and I have already given lots of 10s to movies that are generally considered as "bad". E.g. THE LONE RANGER, TERMINATOR GENISYS, THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN 2 (Even tho it has mixed reviews and not negative), THE BEST OF ME (2014 - ROMANCE)... I have no regret, first of all because it's just a rating, and it's mine. I'm not a professional critic and most people will never even see my ratings. Second, my ratings are all about my opinion and entertainment, if I truly enjoyed the movie and what I consider the most important thing IT BROUGHT MY IMAGINATION TO LIFE, then I rate it high. Of course then there are masterpieces like INCEPTION, THE DARK KNIGHT, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.. that I have given a 10, same as those other movies but just because they have the same rating doesn't mean I love them the same. If I enjoyed it overall, and despite some flaws, it still sticks with me and makes me happy for spending my time on it, then it is either a 9 or a 10. It is an 8 if it has apparent flaws that bring the enjoyment down a little, but still overall a very good movie. A 7 if it's generally flawed but still somewhat entertaining. A 6 if the flaws outweigh the positives, but still the positives are strong moments filled with amazing character developments that never live up to their full potential. A 5 if there are only a couple of scenes to be enjoyed, a 4 if there's that one character or sequence that is done well. A 3 if it isn't a total waste of time, and a 2/1 if it truly sucks (e.g. The Legend of Hercules - 2014).
Was thinking about movies that truly sucked that I actually watched. Cry Baby comes to mind. Poor Johnny Depp. Bet he wishes he had never made that one. Of course, he starred in The Libertine. I hope he regretted that one too!
