It this movie, A Very Merry Muppet Christmas and other recent entries Kermit has seemed like such a pessimistic downer. I don't know when or why his character was changed but I can't stand it. Same goes with Fozzie with the fart jokes and picking his nose, I feel like the people writing for the Muppets these days don't get the characters or weren't fans in the first place.
shareI didn't see that. Yes, he was sad in many scenes, but he was positive for most of the time. When he wasn't, someone else was because he had taught that someone how to be positive. I don't mind this. It's a good contrast for the scenes where he's happy. Otherwise, he would be like GARY & MARY who we're not supposed to take seriously.

shareI guess what the OP means is that in the original Muppets show Kermit was the wacky but slightly more sensible 'frontman' of the Muppets, and in the films he is more of the straight man. I guess its to give him a little more depth and make him not just likeable but relatable too.
As for Fozzie, i think he's more or less the same, no-one was impressed with the fart shoes. It was just something silly he thought might get a laugh. Within the context of this film, everyone is still a bit rusty from being out of action for so long.
A lot of middle-aged men (and frogs) get a bit melancholy when they reach middle age.

I didn't see him as a downer, just sad that they've been forgotten. That was the idea of the film-that they had disbanded. It fit in with reality because there hadn't been a feature film with them in over a decade.
