Apatow's worst
I think Judd Apatow is one of the best comedic writers/directors at the moment. 40 year old Virgin was straight out comedy, Knocked Up got a bit more subtle, and then we have Funny People, which is funny in a certain context. The comedians tell jokes, but they aren't telling us the jokes, they are telling the audience within the film. These moments can be funny, but that isn't the full intention. Funny People is a lot darker than Apatow's previous films, and it works well in that way. The first 2 3rds are solid and work well, but it's when the complicated marriage scenario shows up, when the film starts to fall. It makes me miss the stand-up scenes, and the other characters. Apatow proves that he can blend drama and comedy well, though I think next time he should stick to light hearted material.
