this film was marketed wrong in my opinion
i think if they marketed it as more of a drama it wouldn't have been so negatively viewed.

shareI totally agree. I talked too many people who expected another 1 of Adam Sandler's unintelligent/unrealistic but funny comedies like Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, Waterboy etc.
This was more a realistic real-life Dramedy. Based on comedians (Funny) with real life problems (People).
As far as the ending I actually liked it. It definitely lacked the comedy, but it was realistic. I've heard a ton of stories about married women who feel bored or trapped with their lives (kids, marriage). So they start to wonder about past relationships and what could've been. Not necessarily because they don't like their lives, but out of curiosity. It's kind of like a woman's version of a mid-life crises. Combine that w/ Adam Sandler's characters mid-life crises and it makes a pretty compelling, and surprisingly realistic, end to the movie.

how did the fish in the bong not die?
Wouldnt it die cause of the hot(bubblin) water?
The people I talked to (not too) didn't see it exactly because it wasn't one of his unintelligent/unrealistic comedies. Whenever Sandler does something different he finds himself in this dilemma. His die-hard fans don't wanna see him do drama, his detractors don't wanna see him do anything. So it's hard to market to people who are indifferent to him.
George Carlin: It's all bullsh-t and it's bad for ya.
Except for Punch Drunk Love...
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!
Huh? Punch Drunk Love flopped big time. It was critically acclaimed but suffered the same fate as Sandler's other dramas.

It wasn't supposed to be a big blockbuster film. If anything it was an art house flick. But, that wasn't what I was saying. I was talking about him doing critically acclaimed work as an actor. After all, it was the first time box office success for a picture didn't rest on his shoulders. Not starting anything here, it was just a little side comment.

It was an art house flick but it didn't even make back its budget. I understand your point but we weren't talking about critical acclaim.

I know. I just making a side comment. It had no real relevance but I love that movie.

No it's too (not to). Too is an adverb to "talked". But IMDB isn't the place for English lessons so...
If his "die-hard" fans don't wanna see him do drama then they aren't really his "die-hard" fans.
That is my point though. Sandler has been pigeonholed into these stupid humor type movies (Billy Madison etc.) So that type of humor is what people expect in his movies. Is it Sandlers fault for wanting to make a more intelligent/realistic movie? No, if you only did what people expected then Jim Carry would be doing Ace Ventura 6 and Fire Marshall Bill the sitcom.
So it isn't Adam Sandlers fault that people have idiotic expectations. It's idiotic peoples fault for not being able to except actors as actors and not characters or even caricatures.

You talk to someone but you talk too much to someone. But you're right this isn't the place for English lessons. But wherever that place is...

I think the days of assuming Sandler is going to act like a baffune on every movie are over. Think it ended with a long time ago. He wasn't an idiot in Big Daddy or that 911 movie. This movie just sucked to me. I was just waiting to see if he was going to die, and it seemed like forever. I like dramas, but this movie did nothing for me. I really didn't like when they would just throw in stand up comic jokes for no reason. I guess there was a reason, but they were really cheesy and added nothing to the film. Harry Potter with a PHD. Thats dumb. I just didn't like it, can't think of any specific reason.
But back on topic, your right, most of the trailers I saw were of the stupid stand up comics making jokes. That is what they were trying to market for whatever reason. When I finally caught the movie on cable I was like, this is what the movie is about.
I'm a big Sandler fan and I love Funny People. It is a drama but also a dark comedy, and yes, it was not marketed properly.
Look at the poster. The title, the picture, and the fact they're stating it's from the makers of 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, just seriously gives the wrong impression.
Like I said, I love the movie, even if it was not what I expected. But it seems a lot of people do not really adjust to it, they instead just rate it badly.
I agree. Also I quite like Adam Sandler's dramatic acting. (i.e. Punch Drunk Love, Reign Over Me, and some parts of this film and Spanglish, I really didn't like the film other than him though)
see you later
